Three hours in the chair, only half of them under the drill. They've bumped me up to the grad student floor, which is more expensive, but faster. So Almost-A-Doctor Katie and Almost-A-Doctor Mandy are now assisting Joy, who is driving the drill.
In the same manner that someone who stands seven feet tall has a natural advantage when it comes to being a center in the NBA, Joy has a gift for dentistry in that she is a tiny thing with hands to match. She could be up to her elbows in your mouth and you wouldn't be terribly uncomfortable.
My first dentist, dr Courtice, had hands with which he could palm a medicine ball. I always wished i could evert my head to make it easier for him.
ReplyDeleteI had Dr. Bill Mlkvy as a dentist who patched my mouth up after having some teeth knock out as a kid.
ReplyDeleteHe was an all American and pro basketball player with the regulation size basketball palming hands. I was surprised he didn't break my jaw just poking around but he was very gentle.
Very good dentist and nice guy.

My Dentist has thick hands - like a Blacksmith. I think he could pull teeth without pliers.
ReplyDeleteWhat a co-inkydink, I hope yours was more successful than my chair-time. Doc was under the weather with a bug after his week in Hawaii (too much sun?) and der Haupt-Nurse had vacated to deal with a child/school problem, so after a cleaning and some commiseration we re-scheduled the Do-Over to fix the Fu-Bar...
ReplyDeleteHad a wisdom tooth pulled by a little 4 foot nothing, 80lb. Vietnamese oral surgeon. At one point she had both knees on my chest and was yanking for all she was worth. While not terribly uncomfortable, it was a bit disconcerting. But that may have just been the gas....
ReplyDeleteSitting in the dentists chair, when he says open wide the scene with Dan Ackroyd in the coneheads movie Beldar opening wide comes to mind.

I empathize. Monday was my first visit to the dentist since August of 2010. They only had me in the chair 2 hours, though. For a cleaning.
ReplyDeleteCoincidences abound, was in the chair this morning for cleaning and x-rays.
ReplyDeleteMy mouth feels bigger with the coral scraped off the teef.

Small hands, and small-muscle dexterity, are just what you need in some trades. M'self, I have the small-muscle skills, but have huge boy hands (I have to buy XL gloves).
ReplyDeleteI can imagine a dentist without the delicate touch telling himself, " This is just too much trouble; get the explosives and let's blast!"
WV: whora. Wow.
Thanks why I quit going to guy dentists. They all seemed to have giant hands with big hairy knuckles.

I hate going to the dentist. I've been avoiding it for an embarrassing amount of time.
ReplyDeleteI'm stupid too because I've bee paying extra for dental coverage for all of this time I've been avoiding the dentist.
