News Bite...

"Markets open warily Monday morning as traders worry about the effects of the death of Whitney Houston on the economy."
Oh, come on, it's as plausible as all the other tea leaf reading that goes on out there. Like the DJIA is even remotely connected to anything in the real world anymore...

  4. Course, it's pretty sad when it's credible that some major "news" outlet would use that quotation in all seriousness.

  5. Damn. You made that up? Because I wanted the link, too.

Sat in a doctor's waiting room this morning, and the "news" went on about the poor addled broad for the whole time I was there. Somebody thought it was big news, but I can't imagine why.

Can't be any more disconnected than Whitney Houston apparently was, for her entire adult lifetime.

  6. Driving the markets today, Chinayadayadayada, Greeceyadayadayada, Iranyadayadayada, Dollaryadayadayada, InterestRatesyadayadayada, Mining yadayadayadaObamayadayadayada...

And none of it means a damn thing. Like my ol' granddaddy used to say about weather forecasters and their "percent chance of rain" prognosticating, "Hell there's always a fifty percent chance, either it will or it won't."

Pretty much the same for stocks, commodities, etc. except for when certain "players" intentionally manipulate and move market sectors with a giant trade or just their words, ala Buffet. But for the little guy, it's a crapshoot.

  7. I too was at the doctor's office and got to spend half an hour watching them wait breathlessly for the statement from the coroner's office, not to mention having to watch footage of a plane on the 11pm news while being told that it might be the plane carrying her body back to NJ. (And I care why?) After seeing those display's is it any wonder that Tam's "quote" is completely believable?

I am probably a horrible person, but my first thought was mild surprise that it hadn't happened sooner. I must also admit that I never really cared for her vocal style, and "The greatest love" or whatever its title was, has to be the most narcissistic song ever recorded - just thinking about it makes my teeth itch.

WV: mundera - related to mundane, what this news story ought to have been.

  8. And that apostrophe in display's shouldn't be there. Dang, and I try to proofread....

  9. Folks, until this moment, I did not realize how very fortunate I am that the lobby at my doc's has no television. A bunch of old magazines; stereotypical, watered-down muzak; but no boob tube.
