So I'm over at Days of our Trailers, reading the NRA Convention recap, and he mentions an ATI StG-44 copy in .22LR. How had I missed this?
Now, I've been pretty good about divesting myself of everything other than working guns and the investment stuff in my collection, and this manifestly falls into neither category, but I have a completely irrational wantsies for it. And I mean badly. I couldn't want it any harder unless it had a compass in the stock and this thing which tells time.
It's lacking a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time? Nothing a Dremmel and some hot glue couldn't cure.
ReplyDeleteI'm holding out for one in 7.62x39 using AK mags.
ReplyDeleteAnon 7:28,
ReplyDeleteNot me. I'm buying it as a toy, so it may as well be cheap to shoot.
As real rifles go, there's already a vastly superior one in 7.62x39 that uses AK mags. ;)
Or how about one in 8mm Kurz instead of 7.62K? No, I'm sorry, I'm being a smartass.
ReplyDeleteMy dream is to talk somebody in Europe into making Swiss 10.4 mm (.41 Swiss) rimfire again, so I could get my Vetterli up and running without a centerfire conversion.
And, make up and peddle a .44 Ruger carbine type semiauto that shoots dirt cheap .41 rimfire ammo. 21 grains of 2400 powder pushes a 300 grain flatpoint out at 1700fps with black powder pressures.
Way flatter shooting than a .44 mag, an honest 200 plus yard cartridge, and a fast handling little rifle perfect for anything east of the Mississippi. We all have our dreams.
I'm with you on the whole "completely irrational wantsies" for the StG-44 clone.
ReplyDeleteWhat pushed me over the edge was the "wooden crate handmade by Amish" thing. I'm sorry, but that just tickles my fancy.
Why, oh why, oh why does this sort of temptation have to cross my path????
ReplyDeleteIt's the first thing that's tempted me to actually, "buy new", in quite some time, though I'd be better off with a second Ruger 10-22 or Mark One found on the "secondhand" cash market.
ReplyDeleteOr a face collander.
There is a clone of the MP44 in semi auto that uses the 8mm Kurtz round already...but it's about 4 or 5 grand.
ReplyDeleteSince it hasn't been said yet...
ReplyDelete...you'll shoot your eye out.
(Okay, that's somehow less funny with a .22LR than .177BB.)
There have been some ads in Shotgun
ReplyDeleteNews in the past months.
The gun doesn't do much for me but my youngest son believes it to be cool.
I'll let him buy one and then shoot his.
Remember the compass I gave you? I have a lot of the plastic inserts left. I can get you a couple. And all you need for a sundial is a protractor and a 22 round.
ReplyDeleteSorry Tamara,
ReplyDeleteI have this vision of you prancing around the range with that thing, wearing your re-enactor Fallschirmjager/SS/Wehrmacht duds.
And the worst part is that the thing that makes me giggle & snort is ".22LR"
Sorry. I'll go stand in the corner now.
I understand, Tam.
ReplyDeleteI had a similar reaction to the MG42 dress-up kit for the 10/22. If I could only figure out how to modify it for belt feeding. . .
Ed Foster,
ReplyDeletend, make up and peddle a .44 Ruger carbine type semiauto that shoots dirt cheap .41 rimfire ammo.
What is this "dirt cheap .41 rimfire ammo"? Part of the fantasy?
I still want an FG-42.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised you missed this baby. I did a piece for The Firearm Blog at SHOT 2010 when they had a prototype there and were simply looking to see if there was any interest...did another from the NRA Meeting last year...and FINALLY got to shoot the beast at SHOT this year. It feels just like the original and since it's so damned heavy shooting 22LR out of is almost anticlimactic...but one of the first one's to come in will be following me home anyway because it's just too cool for words.
ReplyDeleteSo, can I assume you haven't seen pics of the MP-44 in 22LR which will follow? It will come with a fake suppressor to hide to barrel and short barrels will be available for those who wish to SBR them. I fear one of those will follow me home too.
Mariner, I'm talking to a guy in France who makes all kinds of wierd rimfire and pinfire ammo.
ReplyDeleteA simple swaged and copper plated bullet inside a basic punched brass case, with the priming compound spun into the rim. Fiocchi supposedly still has the dies they last used for their last run back in the 1960's, but they won't even look at anything under a couple of million rounds.
Despite which, they won't sell the forming and seating dies to the Frog Fellow (who is actually an amazingly cool gent).
But for a half buck a pop or less, I bet there would be a market. We can only hope.
You know, since most Bad Guys couldn't tell the difference anyway, I wouldn't classify it as a "Toy." I think you'd have a very nice "Get Off My Lawn" Gun! So go for it!
ReplyDeleteAnyone else notice the title says 30 rounds and the description says 25??????
ReplyDeleteFergit the Fallshermjager outfit, hows about a skimpy, sexy leather SS hell-witch set o' duds teh go wit teh STG? Blond, good looking teutonic (Ow! lemme go! Just funnin', is all....) naw, you'd end up gettin' stalked by skin-heads, an going to war on 'em..... X-( JohninMd(help)
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty heavy for a rimfire too, so recoil won't be very noticeable. It was definitely one of the neater things at the show.
ReplyDelete1) A gun crate made by the Amish. There's an interesting conflict-of-interests...their pacifism seems to have lost out over their desire to fleece the "Englisch."
ReplyDelete2) Forget the Vetterli. If you simply must have a gun in an obsolete caliber, it may as well be one worth shooting:

Go big or go home.
gvi
"wantsies"? I'm hanging out with the wrong nounists. Obligatory keyboard cleaning fee assessed.
ReplyDeleteOK,but a bit pricy for 25 rds. Now if it came in .30 carbine, with a 30 rd. mag...
ReplyDeleteIf it was a single stack, in 9mm....
ReplyDeleteI fully admit that I am an enabler. Some of the best shoes are made for sitting and are utterly unwalkable. Does that mean those shoes should get no love? Heavens to Betsy, no! Sometimes something wildly impractical is just what the doctor ordered.
ReplyDeleteDon't know about the Stg-44 but I'll swear that Kahr PM45 whispered to me, "Hey big boy. Why don't you come out to my range and shoot with me sometime."
ReplyDelete@Ed Foster: absolutely! I'd love to be able to shoot my Vetterli, esp. since I have not yet located a spare bolt to do a centerfire conv. - you didn't think I was going to use the original, matching SN bolt, didja?
