- "Worse Than SOPA" passes the House on a party-line vote, with the "Small Government GOP" backing the legislation that is opposed by a pretty broad spectrum of people. Barry O is making veto noises, which is more than his predecessor would have done. And I can't believe I just typed that last sentence.
- So Iran is making threatening noises about NYC, and Saudi Arabia has pulled its ambassador from Egypt. Meanwhile, low-grade civil war continues in Syria. So the situation's pretty normal in the Middle East.

Books. Bikes. Boomsticks.
“I only regret that I have but one face to palm for my country.”
That Iranian General also talks about how "easy" it would be to sink an aircraft carrier.
ReplyDelete'scuse me while I go buy more magazines.
> $5,000? "A ____ and his _____ soon are ______."
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was
A man and his cash to buy a new car are soon parted by corrupt cops and asset forfeiture laws.
...but that can't be it, because I'd need a blank second sentence to fit in "And the man is framed for assaulting a police officer, pepper sprayed, and left along in a cell without water for ten hours".
OK, I give up. Time to click the link.
You must be a lot of fun at Rorschach tests.

RE: $5000 M1911
ReplyDeleteA couple of weeks ago, I commented that Americans are willing to spend huge sums on "latest and greatest" firearms and associated equipment and ammo.
I think that this is evidence to my point.
Jebus, for that kind of jack, one could by several Rock Island 1911's and throw them in the trash if they break or buy a decent 1911, hand it over to a competent 'smith, have a superb pistol, and STILL come out ahead.
Iran, I didn't know they made Boston Whalers with that kind of range. (I kid, I kid. I know they can refuel from cargo ships)
ReplyDeleteThere is a lot of patented stuff on that 375 yard 1911.
A claimed engagement range of 400 yards and cover fire out to 600 yards? Seriously? At 600 yards you'd better attach some volley sights to compensate for bullet drop and I question the viability of "engagement of targets to 400 yards".
ReplyDeleteAt 5k a piece maybe they'll just stop issuing the M4 and give Marines the 1911 400-600 yard range pistols.
For $5000 I can bring friends with rifles if I need them.
ReplyDeleteGerry
while it may be a fool and HIS money, it appears this is to be OUR money being spent by Uncle Sam's Misfit Children. Couldn't we just issue Garands with night sights and flash hiders instead? Hell, if you bought CMP "Specials" with those mods, you'd still have enough money to issue Baers, Novaks or Wilsons to every damn Lance Corporal and above...
ReplyDeleteOughtta go back to folks providing their own sidearms as a long as they're ammo compatible; THEN we'd see who's carrying FIVE F'ING GRAND pistols...
Back in the 1930's at least Elmer Keith added some gold cross-bars to his front sights to designate different distances for long range shooting.
ReplyDeleteCompared to this thing, his ideas were a 'bargain' and downright (dare I say it?) 'practical'...
All The Best,
Frank W. James
That CBMWQPBNJ advert is so oddly written, I'm still not sure if it's a new generation of randomly-generated SPAM text targeted at gun buyers.
ReplyDeleteIf it "is designed and built for shooting targets at 25 ranges" why doesn't it tell us what those ranges are? Several paragraphs later it says you can shoot things at 35, 260, 375, and 600 yards, so what are the other 21 ranges it's designed for?
Aaron: That 400 yard plus range requires your entire battalion to volley fire with the sights set at 400 yards.
ReplyDeleteHeh.
"They are warranted against everything including abuse."
ReplyDeleteThis is why it's $5k.

$5,000
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it's very nice.
Boat guy, when I was in it was Uncle Sam's Misguided Children. Sometime Uncle Sam's Marijuana Club.
ReplyDeleteI had to quit reading after I got to the part about cover fire at 650 yards.
Iranian Navy? Send in the Coasties, that will show them who is boss.
If the enemy is 650 yards away, that's not only well out of the effective range of pretty much every pistol caliber, but generally you're pretty hard to hit with intermediate rifle calibers and even quite the challenge with full power rifle rounds.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't recommend standing up and giving the bad guys the finger, but I'd think a good run would be better to disengage (if you're down to the pistol, it's time to leave) than saying "OK boys, volley fire at a 40 degree angle with the handgun that was so expensive we couldn't afford rifles."
Based on my understanding, Barry is making veto noises because the bill is too restrictive to DHS interests. Credit where credit is due, he is making veto noises, but apparently for entirely the wrong reasons.
ReplyDelete"Making veto noises" is completely different from putting pen to paper.
ReplyDeleteA 5K, 19 (by God) 11 with a claimed range of...400 yards.
Before I lost religion and sold my Colt 1991, for giggles I used to attempt 100 yard shots at the rifle range. Usually took raising the entire front sight above the rear, but was doable with about a magazine to recall how much TLAR (that looks about right) elevation. It was a hoot, and milk jugs made good fun to plink against. Of course, this was when you could get a box of God's caliber for under a Hamilton, sometimes for 12 bucks or so.
A gunshop owner and his entire stock of pre war Colt pockets pistols soon are parted if I ever got my hands on a spare easy $5000.
ReplyDeleteRe Iran: I think that Persian Admiral never heard of an OLD saying used in the U.S. Navy Submarine Force. "There are only two types of Ships: Submarines and Targets."
ReplyDeleteMany a moon ago, Eric Timrud and I were at the 200 yard line at Blue Trail Range. For some reason they had a 20 inch by 36 inch piece of boiler plate hanging at 150 yards, and we started trying to hit it with his tight old 1950's vintage 1911.
ReplyDeleteWith the butt grounded and the front sight about 40% above the rear, magazine after magazine went into a round 8 to 10 inch smear. Eric's load was a hard cast Lyman 225 gr. roundnose over 6 grains of Unique, and I've been using it ever since.
A wiser man than me once said something about a pistol's purpose being to keep you alive long enough to get to a rifle, but I wonder if prone "longrange" with unmodified service pistol isn't perhaps a last resort idea that should be explored by more people.
It has the advantage of getting someone prone when the bullets are flying and giving said someone a chance at self defense where none would otherwise exist.
Even with an exceptional pistol, that 150 yard range would be the far side of the envelope, but against a poorly trained loser with an AK.....
O.K., the poor sod would probably still get toasted, but probably beats all hell out of definately.
As for the S7 Material in the wonder gun, I have some recent first hand knowledge of the material, as it's what we're using for the bolt in our experimental .50BMG semiauto. You cook it at around 1775F, and I don't know how to get it down to the claimed 45Rc.
Best I could find was about a 47Rc at 1100F temper, with a suprising amount of warpage for a supposedly air hardening tool steel. And that stuff is TOUGH! Dude, it's what they make jackhammer bits out of.
Which means that final machining would be a stone cold bitch, even for a company that's been doing exotic alloys for 38 years.
We finished the feed slot in the left lug and the extractor cutout in the right lug before heat treat, and still had to play with tradeoffs between hard turning and grinding to requalify the load faces of the lugs and mating surfaces on the bolt tail.
Qualifying an entire slide and frame to serious tolerances after heat treat in S7? I'm not calling B.S., but it would be brutally slow and expensive.
And why? Any forged 1911 slide or frame in 4140, with the frame at 28to 32Rc and the slide about 10 points harder, will run well past 100,000 rounds.
I tried nitriding on some test guns and was totally turned off. It's a disaster waiting to happen in terms of reliability unless the tolerances are so sloppy that repeatable accuracy becomes a joke.
So I think the gentleman is either selling unicorn piss by the bucket, or a status symbol for people who need it. And what is this thing with the constant lube bushing? Throw in a challenging environment, and can you say "Shit Magnet"?
At the gun blogger shoot in AZ a few months back we were shooting my 1911 at steel leaning against the 200yd berm.
ReplyDeleteAfter walking the first few up to the target we found the hold spot on the berm. Lot of fun.
Bang, go get a sammich, clang.
" It is because of poor linkage design that all 1911A1 models and clones fail to remain accurate and in fact are unserviceable after 5,000 rounds."
ReplyDeleteUh.... really?
So all the 10,000 round 1911s that I've fired were anomalies? Heck, I've got a 1911 with about 2,000 that were documented just in quals in and public matches. That doesn't even touch the practice, piddlin', plinking, and load evaluation I've got in it. And it's my most accurate pistol at right around 5k rounds.
Someday we are going to tell our disbelieving grandchildren about the magic boxes called "computers".
ReplyDeleteThey aren't going to believe such things ever existed because they'll have become so useless that any company making them had long since ceased to be in business.
"I wonder if prone "longrange" with unmodified service pistol isn't perhaps a last resort idea that should be explored by more people."
ReplyDeleteI remember reading in the "Ayoob Files" a few years ago about a case where a bad guy with a rifle shot and killed one police officer, and held off several others until one guy got off a lucky shot. (I think he used a shotgun with slugs at a range of 75-80 yards, but wouldn't swear to it.)
In the course of events, one of the officers who was pinned down by the bad guy decided he'd try to take some long range shots with his service weapon. When the bad guy was finally knocked out of action, they found a neat cluster of bullet holes just above where the bad guy's head would have been.
So it isn't necessarily something I'd personally rely on in a pinch, but practicing long range pistol shooting from time to time doesn't seem like an awful idea to me.
Bud's internet-only price is $1300, but all the FFL dealers hold 'em hostage for an extra $2500 over the normal fee.

Obvious Fraud, they are not warranting against the abuse of charging, $4,335.00 more that an STI Spartan......
Frank James in on to it. Folks have been succesfully shooting longer ranges with pistols for a long long time. Being young and gullible, I tried it years ago,...and repeatedly over time, and found it isn't all that far fetched. A 45 is much harder to connect with than a 9mm though. The extra velocity makes a huge difference. Most magnum class revolver rounds make longer range shooting much simpler also, as do the near match quality triggers most have, at least the older Smiths I've mostly shot. An 18" plate @ 300 yards is doable with multiple hits per mag with a G-19. One handed, if that matters. The only time I tried the 24" plate @ 600, I hit it a couple times out of 10 with a spotter calling my misses and the G-19. I'd much rather have a rifle if someone was shooting at me at distance, but effective return fire, or at least return fire that would get someone's attention in a hurry, isn't out of the question. Like anything, the more you do it, the better you can get at it. Holding the front sight over the rear, and keeping the target/front sight relationship the same seems most effective and repeatable. The G-19 requires about 1/2 the white dot up front to be even with the top of the rear to make hits @ 300, using w-w white box 9's. Change bullet shape and the hold is different.
ReplyDeleteMany will simply not believe it, but it's not rocket science or voodoo. Nor does it require a patent rear sight, or artillery sight. Those that don't believe can't understand how anyone can do it. Those that can do it don't understand why everyone can't do it.
Boat Guy - The USMC isn't spending a dime on this nonsense. The link provided is a bid - probably for some Marine Force Recon / Hostage Rescue buy. It didn't say anything about WINNING the contract.
ReplyDeleteMost Marines, like me, think pistols make very nice paperweights, but are otherwise worthless. $5k buys a nice rifle.
"Oughtta go back to folks providing their own sidearms as a long as they're ammo compatible; THEN we'd see who's carrying FIVE F'ING GRAND pistols..."
ReplyDeleteGenerals, mostly .... and they'd never have cause to use them.
If any serious leader, Senior NCO or Batallion level Officer ever really needed an M-4, "there'll be plenty laying around......" ...how hard is it to set the sights to mechanical zero and apply your correction?
Maybe if they had to use an m-4 at 400-600 on a regular basis, they'd be a little more supportive of investigating a more terrain appropriate chambering.... and it ain't Gawd's Own .45ACP (At Close Proximity) ...... but I digress....
.... this was a "CQB" gun?!?!?! WTF does this have to do with a 1/4Mile? Bubpkus. If your rifle, or the nearest un-mannned rifle, is more than 400 yards from you, you'd better have a better 400Meter (running and dodging) time than your average General Officer AND a Diety that has taken a shine to you......
I'm a firm believer that it's the man holding the pistol that makes the difference.

an anti-fowling hammer... How do birds get in the hammer assembly ??? Just wondering
ReplyDelete"Lippard patented Hammer that provides anti-fowling in all conditions." So at least you'll be safe from killer ducks, or have an alternative to MREs.
ReplyDelete"The front sight has serrations that deflect light away form the eye while providing a surface for colored chalk to illuminate according to changing light conditions." Any guesses on what they'll charge for the special chalk?
Mr Foster brings reason and reality to the discussion. Why pick S7 for the slide? Not the right steel for the job. But you have worked with it, so you know.
ReplyDeleteI am dubious as to the claims for this firearm. I did look up to see if there were patents, and apparently there are, but just because an idea is patented ,does not make it a good one.
@ Robert Fowler: Now, now, lets not insult the Coasties. This is Iran we're talking about, after all. Send in two Coastie boots with a rubber raft, an Airsoft rifle, and a box of NutterButters. That should about even the odds.
ReplyDelete@ Bubblehead Les: Amen to that. Got my ex in trouble once...she was in a P3 squadron...I posted a photo we'd taken through the periscope showing a P3 (with crosshairs on it) that wasn't able to find our sub until the next day. Of course, it was tied up next to the pier at the time...
...did I mention she's my EX wife?
