Not a dry heat at all.

103°F (that's not quite 39-and-a-half in Canadian degrees) in Hoosieropolis yesterday; the last time it was this hot here, we had a retired general for a president and tailfins on cars were the coming fad.

Thankfully, though, it was a fairly dry heat; sitting in the shade with a bit of a breeze wasn't unbearable, although I wouldn't have enjoyed trying to weed the garden.

Woke up this morning and drove downtown to meet Shootin' Buddy for breakfast at 0700, and noticed that some kind of front had moved through. Even though the sun was barely up, it was already 80 degrees, and a muggy, sticky eighty at that.

I had brought along my range bag, figuring that after brekkie, I could swing past MCF&G and get some trigger time before the full heat of the day. I rolled into the range just after eight and the Zed Drei's thermometer was reading 86 and not a breath of air was stirring in the pistol bays down in the valley of Eagle Creek.
Being as it was hotter than the hinges of Hades, I didn't plan on being there very long. I grabbed a lightly-used backer with a target already stapled to it and started thumbing rounds into 22/45 mags.

I heart my Oakley Jupiters; they look Wayfarer-esque, but have safety lenses! Getting low on deuce-deuce ammo in the can, there.
120 rounds of .22 (well, 117 rounds of .22; there were three duds,) and a mag though the M&P 9 later, from a little over ten yards, as fast as I could acquire a good sight picture. About the pace you'd use for the shots on the 3x5 in the F.A.S.T., so technically everything should have been in the circle at that clip.  The 9mm hole in the word "Target" is mine; I yelled "D'oh!" as the shot broke, too. Dropped three rounds of .22 out of the circle, as well, which I am not proud of.

The Ruger's starting to run sluggishly, so it's probably about time for its quarterly cleaning. Come to think of it, I should probably clean the M&P before the CTC night match, too.

Got home and scooted into the air conditioning as fast as I could. It's supposed to top a hundred again today, but it's going to be a Georgia-type hundred and not a West Texas-type hundred. A hundred degrees is no fun when it's too humid for your sweat to evaporate. Just in forty minutes in the shade on the range, I was dripping, and it hadn't even hit 90 yet...

  1. They are considering cancelling our pistol/rifle match tomorrow here in SoKY due to heat and fire hazard.

As a shooter I'm hoping the match happens. As an SO I'm not looking forward to running 10-15 shooters in my squad for 8 stages in the heat.

  2. It hit a hundred yesterday in Ohioland.

But it was a dry heat...at least until you start sweating.

  3. Dry heat is deceptive in my experience. Yes, your natural evaporative cooling system works better in a dry heat than swampy heat, but my experience leading various summer-time expeditions out and about has shown that in a dry heat, people tend to dehydrate more readily. They're cooling systems work well, so then tend to forget to replenish those electrolytes more readily. If you feel hot, you make a subconscious effort to maintain your hydration better.

I of course still prefer the dry heat, you just have to remember that hydration.

It's just summer here in Austin. We were just happy that it took until June 20 to break 100 degrees.

  5. Second Rob; low humidity feels better, but you'd better drink constantly or else.

  6. Cleaning a 22/45 is not one of my favorite activities. That thing disassembles like the puzzle box from Hellraiser.

  7. 107 here with an Appleseed this weekend and an uncovered shooting range. I don't know about this.

And that guy with the nails in his head is a real prick about getting it put back together right, too.

  9. Got a Mark One which will be due for a scrubdown one of these days. Had a 22/45 that I sold in a...hm, why did I sell that thing anyways...

But, yes, I'll be testing my recollection of it coming apart after trying it out a couple more times.

  10. 106 in Vegas today, need to head to the range soon to get going before it hits the high...

I just got back form spending 10 days in Michiana, no thank you, its absolutely hellish there, the 105F wx when I stepped off the plane here was like a fresh breeze compared to GRR and CLE.

Remember to drink a lot of gator/powerade!

  11. "Only" 95 here today in Ohio...but danged if it doesn't feel worse than it did yesterday.

FYI: riding a motorcycle in 103 heat is NOT fun.

  12. My son has an old Colt Woodsman .22

I'm no pro with guns, but I've been around them all my life. For the life of me I couldn't figure out how to get it apart for cleaning. I finally downloaded the manual from Colt (yeah, it was still there). Cleaning requires 3 hands and doing a headstand...agggghhhh.

  13. we just finished a three day rifle school here in Lower Alabama. the fact that we all survived was counted as a win.

  14. 111 in my neck of middle TN. What's that? It's a dry heat? Yeah, so's fire.

  15. Just think, 6 months from now, you'll be playing with your new Christmas Present, wishing it was Warm enough to take it out to the Range.

I must admit, having a Summer Home in Anchorage, Alaska does sound nice right about now, since it's pushing 90 1/2mile from Lake Erie!

  16. Off topic question, but what sort of cleaning solvent do you use? One cleaner for everything or this and that?

I've used Ed's Red for a few years, when the mood strikes and the firearm isn't too dirty, I use CPL Break Free. I always wonder if there's anything better. Hoppes works well, but used to give me a headache, so unless they've changed the formula...

I saw some Frog Lube at the LGS today and at $28 for 4oz, I got the heebie jeebies even considering paying that much for cleaner.

  17. Update from Mordor on the Platte (Denver CO). My range just opened completely after being flooded at the start of June. Just broke a string of 101-105 days, Farmgirl's AO has been around 110. Usually a dry heat, RH 5%-12% and that's the problem. If not for the haze and smoke, we could see a pillar of smoke to the north and south. Total state area burning or recently so, roughly 150 square miles. Named fires, 10 or 12 any given time.Total dead, 6 confirmed, 6 missing. Homes destroyed, 600+. Persons evacuated or displaced, roughly 40,000. Entire federal fleet of 8 C-130 fire planes right here. Part of Air Force Academy grounds evacuated but new class intake proceeding. Part of AFA grounds burning, but seems the property is pretty large. President stopped by for a tour/photo op/fund raiser but not much we could do about that. Red Cross happily accepting donations hint hint. See anything you'd like to trade for? 8^) P.S. Most of the nearby states are getting pretty singey too.

  18. All y'all bite me. 103 here in Houston, with 100% humidity to boot. Took my car's temp sensor 20 minutes of highway breeze to stop telling me it thought it was 118 degrees.

  19. The Warrior Workshop,

"If y'all want to feel what summer is like, come on down to Houston for a week."

No, see, I've spent enough time south of the Macon-Dixon Line to know that I hate that kind of weather, which is why I don't live there.

It annoys me that it has followed me here...

  20. I'm finally working a schedule where it will be practical for me to attend an Appleseed, but Austin has been setting record highs for this early in the summer. Sigh.

I bought a Ruger 10/22 a couple of years ago specifically to take Appleseed classes, I guess I need to go ahead and install the recommended mods (bolt release, rear sight and sling).

  21. Tam, c'mon down to the area between Galveston and Houston, and inspect some roofs with me, for insurance claims?

At least I got some releif yesterday, as the boss booked a sea-fishing charter for us in the Gulf. Fifty miles out, and still in the mid ninteys, and hellish humid.

Caught a limit of Red Snapper and Kingfish though, and a quick dip in the deep where you've just boated a few small sharks, is both cooling and invigorating!

So yeah, you know it's humid when you have to chew the air before you breathe it.

So yeah, I feel for you up there on days like those. When it's not the norm, I imagine it's even more painful.

All the more reason for you to chill at ome of those Broad Ripple bistros, yes?

  23. Mulliga: I used to think my 22/45 went together like a puzzle, until I bought a Mauser C96. Now I REALLY know what a puzzle is!

Tam: Thumbing in rounds? You need to pick up a McFadden Ultimate Clip Loader. Pisspoor name, but awesome device for loading mags. Less time loading mags = more time shooting, especially in nasty weather, and your thumbs will thank you too.

  24. Tam... I made a little tool years ago to help me take down my old Standard model Ruger. A t-handle w/ a link of window sash chain cotter pinned on the end, forms a loop to pull the take-down latch on the back of the grip frame out. Makes take down fairly simple. I've also got, thanks to my Bullseye coach's generosity a Clark steel trigger, complete w/ overtravel stop. Any idea if Clark's ever made 'em for a 22/45? JohninMd(help?)

  25. Tam:

The Bluegrass station [just across Northshore from where you used to bunk] that feeds data to Wunderground reported 106.7°F. late this afternoon.

I've been getting nasty text messages from the big sidexside fridge in the back of my garage...it's 96° there and it wants to know how I've f'd up. Technology...what're you gonna do?

The local forecast for Independence Day is 91°...cold front!

    Rain? Pfffft...
