Stanley Steemer's ad campaign for the last several years has just been brilliant, on the whole. The slightly-obsessive carpet cleaning guy they had on was the coolest ad frontman this side of Progressive's Flo.
Somehow, this doesn't come across as pathetic as the Steve Tyler/BK commercial. I think the difference is Dee Snider isn't cleaning carpets, and it's all too easy to imagine Tyler working at BK.
Well, the old Hair Metal/Glam Rock scene wasn't exactly lousy with integrity, was it? Back in the day, I'm pretty sure you could buy everything from hit-men to spare kidneys with a Kiss logo on it. In Blighty, however, we recently had to witness anarchist punk heroes Iggy Pop and Johnny Rotten flogging car insurance and butter, respectively. Which is a bit like catching Dian Fossey going after baby chimps with a knife.
I have a suspicion that scratch any 'star' and you'll find a kitty-litter salesman underneath.
IF he's anything like me, not born yet. Of course, that's no excuse, seeing as my generation brought Slipknot, Mudvayne, and *shudder* Insane Clown Posse to the fore.
A couple of aging rockers in the cellar and maybe one in the garage wouldn't hurt anything; probably be better than glue boards & rat traps at keeping the Jehovah's and statists away.
Too old already. In 1982 I had graduated college and was a stripper in DC, after the summer in SD archaeology dig convinced me more University was just going to waste my time and theirs. But first I was a lawn-boy doing day-labor with ex-cons and lifting things, then a Real Job: noon till 10:pm I was assembling camera ready Ad-art in a darkroom. I've heard *of* them - peripherally - but managed to never actually listen to a single note or seen any images until the TV commercial hit - just not in my tune-bag. Guess I'm pretty good at being really tightly focused - or over-wound, whichever.
I haven't heard any Meatloaf at the grocery store but I swear to god I have heard at least one of the songs off Pretty hate Machine playing in an elevator.
Where were you in 1982? Ooh, pick me, pick me! Camp Page, Republic of Korea. When I wasn't in the Chorwon Vally and points west. (Spent time on Glocester Hill and didn't know it...)
I WANNA VAC!
ReplyDeleteVAC!
[guitar solo]
I WANT TO... VAC!
Nah, just don't see it...

ReplyDeleteAt least your carpets will be clean when they leave.
ReplyDeleteMike
I was pleasantly shocked when I saw this the first time. Absolutely brilliant.

Most convincing argument yet for always answering the door armed.
ReplyDeleteSad Story:
ReplyDeleteOne morning, far in the dim past, Dee Snider woke from a wild, jumbled dream and exclaimed, "I know what I want to do with my life!"
And no one intervened.
We're seeing more old rockers in mainstream commercials...
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking they're running out of money?
Seen the Burger King with Steven Tyler?

ReplyDelete"We're not gonna take it!"
ReplyDeleteGood lordy...I didn't think he could look any worse than he did in the 80's. I was WRONG...
ReplyDeleteI figure Steven Tyler will be doing an ad for an elevator for the infirm in about a week. "Lovin' an elevator!"
ReplyDeleteI missed it when rock-n-roll turned into a Circus clown-act, is that what shows are now like?
ReplyDeleteDirtCrashr,

Where were you in 1982?
I got their Christmas Album. Dee rocks the hell out of "O Come All Ye Faithful".

And they say smoking dope doesn't harm your brain.
ReplyDeleteAnybody else heard Meatloaf in the grocery store music rotation?

ReplyDeleteCoupla years ago (before this commercial) I had Stanley Steemer do my carpets. The guys that came were all goth. Did a good job.
ReplyDeleteHeh, I accidentally typed "Satanley Steemer"
I think Little Richard pretty well puts the lie to the idea of an earlier era in which rock was dignified.

Gah... THAT deserves shooting...
ReplyDeleteI just checked the June 8 Daybydaycartoon and Tam's made an appearance again! And I can SO imagine her delivering that line!
ReplyDeleteTam,
ReplyDelete*sigh*. "Allow me to share"
That's twisted, sister.
Re: LCB
ReplyDeleteI don't think Lordi have featured in any commercials yet.
What are you doing in Florida Tam? :D
