Went by Goose The Market with Shootin' Buddy on Saturday, as he'd never been. If you are a meat-eating foodie, their display cases border on the pornographic. You can get a t-shirt that reads "Vegetables are what food eats" on the back, complete with a line drawing of a cute little bunny rabbit eating a carrot, just like the whole, cleaned bunny rabbits available for sale in the showcase.
I bought some of their pastrami, and oh... oh my. This is the platonic ideal of pastrami, right here. All the other pastrami I've eaten has been mere shadows on the cave wall. Bobbi had a few slices; if you don't believe me, believe her.
Last night, I daintily wrapped a few slices around some chunks of Prima Donna cheese and ate them with slices off a sourdough baguette. They were so good that today I just dispensed with the niceties and dumped the rest, probably a third of a pound, on a plate for lunch and ate the thin, fatty slices with my fingers, making growling noises if the cats came too close.
Man, that was good.
You know, a specialty market like that might be able to snag some of the Iberian jamon de bellota. It's pure meat ambrosia. There's a reason it's in the truffle price range.
ReplyDeleteWhen we were in Barcelona I couldn't get enough of the stuff. Meat-eater's heaven. In fine restaurants they had a leg mounted on a table in the center of the room and would carve oh-so-thin slices as the orders were taken. It's finally available in the States -- for a price.

My God, it's full of stars!
ReplyDeleteYum! There is a fabulous deli in Williamsburg that we visit for fare such as you describe. Haven't been in a while...
ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of the hot pastrami (and corned beef) at Shapiro's downtown. The meatloaf is "to die for" as well.
ReplyDeleteMan, that was good.
ReplyDeleteAs I'm fond of saying, "Nothing better than life at the top of the food chain."
Any place that advertizes "18 feet of meat" is my kind of place.
ReplyDeleteYour inner feline is showing again :)
ReplyDeleteI have got to get that shirt. That's even better than Kevin's "Meat is murder....tasty, tasty murder."
ReplyDeleteGreat place; I remain . . . concerned about the neighborhood. Couldn't they put it in a more twee area, like 24th and New Jersey or was War Zone D all booked up?
ReplyDeleteShootin' Buddy
Shootin' Buddy, it's a heck of a lot nicer than it used to be! I live about 8 blocks south of that, and my son and his friends have no problem with biking up there of a Saturday for lunch. The new retail and in-fill construction has really made that area a much more stable neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteSome of our sales force describe the culinary horizons of Indianapolis as being somewhat... limited. As in, "You CAN get a good meal there; they have an Applebee's."
ReplyDeleteI think they are missing something.
I'll second the suggestion for Shapiro's. There is hardly a Legionnaire in town for meetings that doesn't make a beeline for them.
ReplyDeleteYeah, docjim, your sales drones need to get out more.
ReplyDeleteMetro Indy has some phenomenal eating establishments.
Perhaps they're looking for well-known chains, which is a mistake.
"Some of our sales force describe the culinary horizons of Indianapolis as being somewhat... limited."
ReplyDeleteJust tell your sales force to read Tam's blog and get out more. She's been to some of the highlights.

ReplyDeleteI've done that with smoked ham shanks.
I first saw the quote "Vegetables are what food eats" in a webcomic:

Extra extra points for the reference to Plato's Republic.
ReplyDelete"If you are a meat-eating foodie..." is there any other kind of foodie? Vegetarians are dumb.
