18 cylinders, 1100+ horsepower, $400,000
Street scene in Portland: Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and Audi R8 GT. Couple of nice little grocery-getters right there...

  1. A group of us got together in Portsmouth NH Saturday night to discuss the Northeast contingent's travels to CO in October.

Leaving the restaurant, what do we see in traffic but one of these...

    Talk about incongruous...

  2. WOW! I took the back way out of town and missed that!

There is a nice restaurant in town that it must be an owner or manager who drives in every day in a V-12 Turbo AMG, and there's a fella who on the next street down who I suspect is renovating an old restaurant who's grocery getter is a Bentley Continental GT Coupe Turbo W12.

Nice cars, but I wonder how often they get a chance to stretch their legs. At least the AMG in your picture looks like it might see a track day or two.

  3. Those cars are a waste. I mean, where can you find a non-potholed road to let either one loose without getting a "state subsidy receipt"?

Though if you've got the bankroll for one of those, you've probably got the money for enough land to have a racetrack on the premises.

  6. Made the mistake of watching too many Top Gear reruns over the weekend. Now I want one of these, a sports car I can actually afford...someday:

  7. Funny, the Merc looks like it's reclining and the Audi looks like it's leaning forward.

I need to avoid looking at stuff I can't afford.

  8. Having had some seat time in the R8 V10 (on a track, no less), I can vouch that it is an absolutely amazing vehicle. There's absolutely nothing like putting your right foot flat to the floor and having well over 500HP explode right behind you.

If I had pushing $200K (base price is about $150 large, but you want to leave room for some options, right?), I'd be all over one. However, without plans to take the thing to a track, one might as well save $50,000 and go with the V-8... not quite as explosive or exotic without the Lamborghini engine, but still way faster than you'd ever get a chance to use.

  9. You know, I really am happy with my merely 412Hp $27k Mustang. Hell, I can't use all of that horsepower on the street, anyway.

    But it's fun trying.

  10. LOL, passed an R8 on 66 yesterday pulled over with a flat... Rubber band tires and Metro DC roads are NOT compatible!

  11. Saw an R8 parked in front of Draegers in Los Altos yesterday, maybe they drove down from Portola Valley. I'd rather have a KTM 990 Duke and save the $ for retirement.
