From the list of the ingredients minus the alcohol, it looks like Wizard Oil would make a passable bug repellant to satisfy woodsmen of the late 1800s:
At 100-140 proof, sure wouldn't want to smoke anywhere near a Wizard Oil user, though...perhaps it was an early form of anti-smoking beverage or lotion?
Last thought: thinking about snake-oil salesmen and their assuredly gullible customers reminds me of why we have political parties, too.
A barrel of oil is 42 gallons When they quote the spot price of a barrel of oil after the residents of most of the oil producing nations show their lack of civility and ethics, that barrel of oil is 42 gallons. I'm not sure when the 55 gallon drum became common, but we had one in the back yard growing up.
I guess that would depend on the fat content of the wizards in question.
