The big takeaway from the RECOIL thing...

The fact that internet gun dorks almost instantly turned this into a discussion about HK guns* rather than about their exploitation by a shallow and calculating publishing company that didn't even think highly enough of their intelligence to hire someone who was actually a gunnie to run their new "Maxim For Gun Owners Who Use Axe Body Spray" book depresses the living **** out of me.

*I probably didn't help.

  1. Yeah, don't get me started about "self defense" publishing companies that are managed by people who neither own nor carry firearms.

  4. Gee, I wonder why folks think gun owners are either crazy or assholes? There doesn't seem to be an end to the hoards of folks with an internet connection who'll jump at the chance to look down their noses at anyone who doesn't fit their idea of what gun ownership is.

At some point, people start off on the trek of gun ownership and I doubt any of us started where we are today. I for instance bought the "James Bond gun" for my first pistol and not the cool one either. Counter-Strike certainly had a hand in getting me more interested in guns as well, though my buddies had more to do with it (truth told though, I just bought a Zurich surplus P228 because Counter-Strike).

I understand that unsafe practices shouldn't be tolerated and that includes strapping your Glock to your leg in the cheapest, floppy-est nylon drop holster you can find and strolling about the mall in your camo BDUs that don't fit either (I've seen this for truth). That said, if you want X gun because of some game or movie and you find out shooting is awesome, well dammit, good on you.

Oh and there are far worse things than drinking the HK Koolaid.

  5. Tam's Law: In any discussion of a disguised anti-gun/anti-self-defense person/organization, a percentage of the readers will ALWAYS devolve a discussion of the merits of the firearm involved.

Re-word as needed for clarity, that's just a first draft

  6. At least on my part, all there was to discuss was the gun--Tam had already said enough to eviscerate the author--The gun by You Suck and We Hate You was the only think left in the crater.

  7. Tam, if you're still depressed, this ought to cheer you up:

Yes, but any internet discussion of a firearm will always devolve to a discussion of 9mm vs. .45

Therefore, at its core, any firearms discussion is an argument of caliber. - making the caliber question equivalent to the base metaphysical question of what the meaning of life is....

  9. So, I should create a wildcat .42 pistol round, and we can all live in peace and harmony?

  10. Larry Correia wins the Intarwebz:

"If I was one of Recoil’s investors, I would be pissed off, and I’d really want to know what dumbass made the decision to hire people who knew absolutely nothing about a particular culture to edit a magazine about that culture. That is sort of like hiring Michael Vick to be editor of Dog Fancy."

  12. RECOIL magazine was quite effective in making itself permanently irrelevant. Not much more to say about them. Even if we were in the horse-beating habit, we'd generally choose to give up when the horse was dead.

But jokes at the expense of "You Suck, and We Hate You, GMBH" will always be funny. :)

Why? They already make .40 Short&Weak. Just get the longer 10mm... oh, wait, those crack frames...

Tom Gresham came on the TV a while back talking about the 9mm vs .45 argument... He said it don't matter, just pick one and get good with it, and you'll probably end up getting both anyway.

Also, between 10mm/.40 and .45's, there's also .41mag, .44Special, and .44mag, all of which are known good rounds, but mostly in revolvers.

  14. How about going in the other direction and making the 15x17mm, aka .60 cartman(for being short and fat)?

  15. "So, I should create a wildcat .42 pistol round, and we can all live in peace and harmony?"

Nah, won't work. People have already shunned the two best compromises at "bridging the gap." The .41 AE approached from the 9mm side of things and the .400 Corbon approached from the .45 ACP side of things. Since one is dead and the other is dying (dodges stones - hey, I'm a fan of both!), I can only conclude that peace and harmony will never be found by seeking the ultimate caliber. It was a nice dream though ;)
