So, my dead desktop has my only running copy of Acrobat on it, which I kind of need to do some, you know, work-type work over the weekend. So I'm going to drag its mortal remains to the 'puter store and see if the drive is salvageable, and which would be cheaper (or even feasible): A bare-bones XP system into which I could drop the old drive, or just getting a Winders 7 version of Acrobat for this machine.
Anyhow, I was sitting here, fretting, and not wanting to go anywhere until I'd heard back from various bosses and coworkers and whatnot via email... all while the Portable Magic Elf Box* is sitting there all charged up next to me. Derp. I guess I can just unplug the dead box and go, then...
*That would be the Android phone, for new readers. Which, you know, can get email anyplace, even in line at the 'puter store.

ReplyDeleteYou should wrap that Elf-Box up in fresh green leaves in order to protect it for your journey. It may not keep it Lembas-fresh for months, but it might keep the battery charged a few extra hours.

You can get a 30 day free trial from Adobe - just download it. Also, if you downloaded it from Adobe, your Adobe account should show the serial number. Furthermore, you could sign up for Adobe Creative Cloud, and for $50 a month, you have access to damn near everything Adobe makes.

I lucked out on my last PC build. Board or power supply fragged, dropped the hdd into a Vista box, it reconfigured itself to the "new" hardware, clicked reactivate, and it still soldiers on. The joys of DIY computers, kinda explains my like of the AR.

ReplyDeleteXP is remarkably tolerant of having the boot drive dropped into an entirely different chassis, actually. The worst thing that happens its it decides it needs to reactivate which at worst is a give minute call at Microsoft's expense to India.

ReplyDeleteI've also got an old XP-class PC here that I'm not using, if you need parts. All I want out of it is the power supply and the case, and frankly you could probably have the power supply, too. As far as I know it still works fine, but I haven't booted it in over a year. I'll shoot you an email with contact info if you're interested. Or I think Bobbi has it.
Not knowing what you are using Acrobat for, there are lots of options, Nuance PDF professional products work well at a fraction of the price of the Adobe. And as was mentioned, many freeware options exist.

Actually a spanner is either a type of wrench in the states or a type or screw head type.

ReplyDeleteOr PDF Creator (on Sourceforge) will install a virtual printer that you can use to "print" to a PDF.
