Here's a puzzler and no mistake:

I would like to see a Venn diagram of the following sets of people:
  1. Those who say that rape and other crimes of violence aren't usually perpetrated by masked strangers in bushes, but rather by acquaintances or even family members, and...

  2. Those who say you shouldn't own a firearm because statistics show that it is more likely to be used on a family member or acquaintance than on a masked stranger in the bushes.

  1. Good point. You might link to the guy who shot the black-clad dood in the balaklava outside his sisters house. You know, the one who came at him with a knife?
'Course I guess there were some bushes there too...

  2. I would like to see a Venn diagram for 1) people who are guided by logic and rationality and 2) people who make laws.

  3. Boat Guy beat me to it! Kind of off the subject but I find it interesting that the potential victims in the two previous posts chose to call family for help rather than the police.

  4. Umm, wouldn't it just be a single circle?

    Or is that the point?

  5. Your supposition indicates a congruence of 1; meat axe's indicates a congruence of 0.

    Shocking, I know.

  6. Probably not 1/0 probably more the usual 80/20...ok, 85/15.

  7. Yeah, im gonna go with perfect circle on this one

  8. So does that mean I Know and am Related to all those Rapists currently in the State Pen just because I own Firearms?

Gee, I never knew my Family was that big.

  10. Oooops, my Bad! "Those who SAY..." Got it! I interpreted that it was "Those who OWN Firearms..."

    Sorry 'bout that.

  11. There's Lies, Damned Lies and then there's Statistics....

....lost in the Statistics is the fact that a majority of victims know or are related to somebody that seriously needed shootin' ....

I want to see the Venn of A)those that advocate for more gun control and a reliance on Lawdog's "Paper Armour" B) have guns (or men with guns!) to protect their own hpocritical bee-hinds..... "Lex Bovis, non Jovis" comes to mind.

  12. Prime rule of statistics interpretation: how do you define who is in the group and who isn't?

The problem with the set of "murders committed by a murderer known to the victim" is that the set of murderers and murder victims is almost entirely composed of people in the illegal drugs business.

So, far from the gun-banner's image of me getting mad at Uncle Edwin over a rules infraction during the weekly family Monopoly game and offing him by means of busted cap, most of the crimes in this set are the result of a difference of opinion among professional criminals.

Owning a firearm does not automatically make a dealer of illegal drugs out of me, so statistics based on this population are not likely to predict my outcomes.

  14. Closely overlapping circles there. Interesting how the gun grabbers and the media don't want to consider the probability that the family member/friend/acquaintance is a criminal shot in the commission of his crime. The truth doesn't fit the narrative, I guess.

  15. John Ross author of "unintended consequences" wrote of a similar concept on his blog Ross in Range.
In St. Louis MO, the black population is inordinately victimized by violent criminals, voting for longer sentences, yet they voted almost unanimously to not have shall-issue concealed handgun permits. His theory on this was that while they are against violent crime, many of them have a relative of some degree in that business, and they would rather this relative do time rather than take a dirt nap, so the contradiction

  16. "more likely to be used on a family member or acquaintance"

Drug deal gone bad? Yep, they are acquainted.

Mafia Hit? Yep, they are acquainted.

Drive By the competing pusher on the block? Yep, they are acquainted.

Killing the witnesses after you knock over the business you work in? Yep, they are acquainted.

Going Postal? Yep, they are acquainted.

Ex gunning down his ex-significant other? Yep, they are acquainted.

  17. Here you go, Tam. It's not as funny as John's answer.

  18. Add a third circle: those who ask why you'd rather own a firearm than rely on the police to protect you.

  19. @Steve Skubinna: The outside (non-overlapping) portion of that third circle can correctly be labeled, "People who live in a place where 'it can't happen'". The "wing" that overlaps with the "you shouldn't own a gun because..." circle will have the label you gave. The other "wing" would be labeled, "People who think you're an inbred redneck" (it overlaps the "victimized by a family member" and the "support gun ownership" circles).

  20. So, you're thinking something like this, Tam?

  22. What about family members who wear masks and attack you from the bushes?

Or complete strangers you happen to find in your home, hiding in the wainscoting, like angry sheep?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Given that this story is about a family member who obscured his face and attacked his father out of the bushes, I think you know what we think should be done about that.

What I want to know is where you find sheep that hide in the wainscoting. I wanted some fricken sharks with fricken laser beams, but I've changed my mind. When I become an evil overlord I want angry sheep who hide in the wainscoting of my enemies and attack them when they least expect it.

    BAAA Mutha Fucka!!!

  24. Hmm. Here in St Louis last month we had a 43 year old nephew kill his 44 year old uncle in an argument over which specific cut of pork was on the barbecue grill. That certainly fits the guns kill family meme. News of this incident has been conspicuously short. One can only wonder what else the miscreant was involved in previously. The nephew, by the way, was correct; they were grilling pork steaks.

  25. Had I come out of the bushes (face obscured or not) with a knife under similar circumstances, my dad would have put me down like a dog.

And been right to do so.

  26. Family members?

    Isn't that called a "dependent" variable? ;-)
