Well, actually mine was named "Auntie Tank", and my Ex's was yclept "Nick Schießen", but anyway...
Here in Hoosieropolis, there was a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the parking lot of Don's Guns, leading purveyor of fine firearms at MSRP+ to the segments of society that even the most rabid proponent of the RKBA can agree probably shouldn't have guns. Or knives. Or sticks. Or kids. Or oxygen.
Roomie points out that the "No Loaded Guns" sign on the door may have been a contributing factor, by mandating the finger-banging of loaded firearms in the parking lot in the name of safety.
I can't say I necessarily disagree; any time Ice Dog or Cletus is forced to mess around with loaded heaters, loud noises may result.
Rather than "homunculus," I've always preferred the term "avatar," since my first exposure to the term was in the Ralph Bakshi movie Wizards.
ReplyDeleteHere's the scene that impressed the term in my eighth-grader mind. Since Blackwolf had engaged in a war of aggression, I'm sure that Tam's readers will enjoy this clip of how Blackwolf's war ends.
Did he have a buddy called Kenny Scheiße?
ReplyDeleteMSRP+ we have here and I agree with you. I don't like going there. I do so however when some old thing shows up there that I need.
ReplyDeleteThis has happened in front of our shop. Not the gunshot wound but the unskilful fiddling loaded firearms by would be customers that are faced with the policy statement on the door. Not often but when it happens in is nerve wracking.
ReplyDeletefinger banging. huh, huh, huh...
ReplyDeleteAuric Tech,
ReplyDelete"They've Killed Fritz!" has always been one of my favorite scenes.
And somehow apropos to this post

I do not go to stores that have "no weapons allowed signs". In fact I have not eaten at a Mexican chain I like that is located in a place I frequent because they do not allow guns.
ReplyDeleteAround here (Southern Arizona) one gun shop has a sign that says to have actions open and keep carry weapons in the holster or you will be asked to leave. The other has no such sign.
It will be a cold day in hell before a gun store that doesn't think I have the right to carry will get my money.
Jeez. You get the best Spam.
ReplyDeleteI shot at Don's last year. Nice place, but yeah, the sign is annoying. I'm siding with roomie.
The range here has the same sign. Drives me nuts. Tell me again why I bothered to get a permit and training?
Mexican restaurant here in OKC, the day open carry became legal, put big 'no guns' signs on the doors. Never had them before, but apparently they desperately feared horrors occurring now or something.
ReplyDeleteHaven't been back since.
Don's Guns is right in my Line-of-Sight every time I drive to or from my Reserve center. Went there once out of curiosity.
ReplyDeleteMSRP+ puts it mildly. Maybe something bad happened in the store that day but I'd never seen a staff quite so surly and anti-social.
If I ever went into the gun-buying-and-selling business, I'd insist that my sales associates wear jackets and ties (similar level of attire for the female sales associates).
If people are willing to come into my store and pay the same kind of money they'd spend at a jeweler's, the people working there ought to look like they deserve that kind of money.
It's far enough out of my way that it costs me nearly my entire lunch hour, but I get more shopping enjoyment out of the Tandy Leather Factory store on High School Road than I do at Don's Guns. Everyone who works there is cheerful and helpful - the manager herself is like a bucket of sunshine.

I suspect, Ryan, that I know to which town's gun stores you're referring. Is the non-posted gun store next to a games and comics store?
ReplyDeleteI used to do business with Tandy and Leather Factory before they merged. I generally had a great time dealing with those people. The gun shops I've visited have either been real good or real bad... the latter I tend to steer clear of while the former I tend to want to visit and see what they have his week. Price tags may be another story.
ReplyDeleteThe gun store/range I frequent has the same "no loaded guns" sign. But here in Maryland, almost nobody except cops can get a carry permit, so the irony always gives me a little chuckle. However, about every other month I see someone asked to leave because they have their pistol loaded in their range bag, which is illegal in MD, besides getting you asked to leave the range and come back another day.
ReplyDelete"Nick Schießen". Was the next guy in line named Hande Hoch?
ReplyDeleteWoot, Tam! For a moment there, before I looked again and paid attention, I almost thought you wrote "incubus" there.
ReplyDeleteBut then, I thought and read again, and understood that you would never entertain that kinda critter.
Say, Tam? If any succubi come around asking for directions, would you please send 'em my way?
I was going to mention that the order of the ie/ei was very important here, the Germans are very sensitive to mispronunciations and the wrong one might not get the desired reaction, but Chas Clifton beat me to it, in a manner of speaking!
ReplyDeleteFirehand, a friend wanted to see the Yanni concert when it came to town. We all got frisked going in, no glass bottles, etc.; I had to go to the parking lot to return my Tourist Swiss Army Knife to the car! Rough crowd those Yanni fans, I tell you!
Not that sitting through the concert paid off, he's pleasant, but no more than Andre Rieu.
