Difficulty Level: *EASY*

The spare M&P 9 is being used to test stuff, like that Leupold Deltapoint.
A few hundred rounds of shooting and a couple of months banging around in the range bag and the Leupold Deltapoint's still holding zero... and I have to admit that the slide-mounted red dot is kinda growing on me a little.

I was wanting to get the slide cut for Unity Tactical's ATOM mount system,  but the M&P variant remains vaporware. I guess I should get the thing cut into the slide and then shoot the bejabbers out of it some more and see how long it takes to make the zero wander (or if I can find that much 9x19.)

Note metal magazine baseplate from 10-8 that Caleb scored for me which has cool little finger indents so that if your gun has some horrible double-feed malfunction you can go all operator on it and tear the stuck mag out with less chance of breaking a nail. Also, the extra weight makes the empties exit the gun quicker, which is good, because I need all the help I can get with my reloads.

  1. If you like this configuration, you'll love it with the RDS milled into the slide and iron sights. It feels like cheating.
I got mine from TSD Combat systems, but I'm sure there are others out there.

  2. "go all operator on it and tear the stuck mag out with less chance of breaking a nail."

The juxtaposition of those two thoughts is practically a divide by zero error. Great. Now I have to try and sleep.

  3. C'mon Og....
Surely you've met the Mary Kay Commandos.

  4. So the dot mounts in the rear sight dovetail?

  5. For faster mag departure, you could go browning hi power and get those factory mags with the spring in the base. Empty they nearly make it out of the mag well even when the gun is upside down :)

  6. +1 to og's comment. GMTA.

When I hit the line "and tear the stuck mag out with less chance of breaking a nail."
it stopped me dead in my tracks.
That right there was a free ice cream moment with a cherry on top.

Why you aren't getting regular checks from some gun pr0n rag is beyond explanation.

  7. I'm going to guess no, but I'll ask. Does the extra weight of the red dot require any recoil spring change?

My M&P seems to not lock up with authority as it is, so I ask.

  8. Joseph,

Nope. Stock spring works fine. Getiing it recessed into the slide will actually result in a net weight loss, as the sight is lighter than the steel removed.

  9. It was only a 'one time thing', but one day at the range, a buddy of mine let me try his race gun(an STI 9mm) with a Deltapoint. I was fairly impressed...it was neat making 100 yard shots with a pistol(but I still liked the 'feel' of my CZ-75 better)

I would like to get a Deltapoint for mounting on my Mossberg.

  10. What TFA303 said. I had TSD (full disclosure- that's Gabe Suarez's bunch) mill my G20 slide for an RMR and I like it a lot. I even bought a second slide for my G29 so I can have the same thing done to it at some point (I don't want to be without use of the 29 while it is being done).

I think that you'll be happier with the permanent mod, because the BUIS are an important part of the package. In addition to providing backup sighting, they help when you are learning to use the dot. Instead of trying to find the dot, you look for the sights as you normally would, which causes the dot to appear when you achieve your regular index.

  11. I wonder if one of these things would survive atop my model 29?

  12. That's So Operator, you're gonna grow a beard.

I'd like to hear if you're able to track the dot during recoil or if you have to reacquire it every time.

  13. pdb,

Dot goes away during recoil, but when it comes back, I know I can press the trigger again. It seems to make a better "green light" for me than irons thus far, but I want to give it some more time and then see what the timer says.

I'm not operator enough to track the sights all the way through recoil, sadly, although I try. Since I have to reacquire the irons, too, the slide-mounted dot doesn't have the same built-in handicap for me as it does for really good shooters.

  14. I definitely need new glasses. I though the light was SIDE-mounted, and wondered if you also held the gun sideways. . . . (eye roll)

  15. Mine is on a 10mm... Track the dot through recoil, ha ha. I'm not the world's greatest marksman, and I find that the dot doesn't help me with slow fire or first shot accuracy as much, but it does make me faster and more accurate from shot to shot.

THAT would provide cover for the current nose job!

  17. Is the Deltapoint noticeably smaller than the RMR? Well thinner I guess, I want to put one on a 1911.

I've got one with Hienie straight 8 sights and I really don't like them, and there's pretty much no way to replace them short of milling the slide - So I have a candidate.

  18. I have the problematic VTAC sights on my M&P. They cost a lot of money so I am resigned to something I can hang off the rail. I will not put a CT laser on the back as I like my slowly and carefully executed stippling job on the back strap with a soldering iron. I think CT would not like that on the laser.

  19. WANT!! But then I'd have to buy 9mm ammo. Maybe I can do that cut to the Sig ST.
