This morning I discovered that fellow Mencken fan Bobbi had thus far not crossed paths with the fabulous H.L. Mencken essay on gun control, "The Uplifters Try It Again."
Isn't it always a pleasure to introduce two dear friends who you know will hit it off well?
.
Mencken was white. And male. And Piers Morgan would instantly peg him as "un-American."
ReplyDeletePlus, Chris Mathews would mock him as an ignorant racist.
Funny how things are cyclical. How the same arguments for gun control have been pushed for over 90 years and yet the bastions (NYC) of gun control have never been actually able to prove that their laws do anything positive to reduce crime.
ReplyDeleteMatt W, progressivism is not about arguments or results. Feelings trump all. A tragedy occurs and We Must Do Something! For The Children!
ReplyDeleteAnyone who argues that the proposed remedy will have no effect, or will be counterproductive, or who points out that it's the same useless policy that has been implemented and failed before, hates children. If progressives really thought about anything, they'd soon figure out that gun free zones are really victim reserves. They'd realize that law abiding citizens, by definition, obey the law and criminals, also by definition do not. They'd realize that the parts of America with the most draconian gun laws have the highest crime rates.
Getting two good friends together is, indeed, one of the great pleasures in life. God bless.
ReplyDelete"Coolidgism, Rotarianism, Stantaquaism and other such bilge"
ReplyDeleteI am a fan of HLM but this country could use a healthy dose of Coolidgism right 'bout now.
I put @HLMenckenBot in my Twitter feed because Mencken!
ReplyDeleteWhat's really interesting, is when you introduce two of yer friends to each other, and they _don't_ get along. I have had this happen IRL, but more often on the Net, as in,
ReplyDelete"Why don't my Milblogger friends get along with my gun-nerd friends?
(The above is a mild example; I have corresponded cordially with Nazis, Jewish Supremacists, disgusting hedonistic perverts, serious Christian ascetics, HBD types, Blank Slaters, and so forth.
I'll talk to anybody who minds his manners. That excludes most leftists and feminists, of course.)

ReplyDeleteYes!
Sadly, most of the time, for me, those people are like, a thousand miles apart, minimum. :-/
