Remington 870 w/Mesa Tactical, Magpul, Surefire, and Scattergun Technologies goodies... |
I like the Surefire under the forend better than the Inforce on the side of it in pretty much every way except for weight.
While I'm still not much of a shotgun person, having my own fowling piece will allow me to dabble in Three Gun and not have to borrow a gauge. The flashlight will come in handy this August...
Half credit for the sling.
ReplyDeleteAre there hooks in bathrooms and pants on monkeys down there?
Shootin' Buddy
I loved my Surefire forend. Loved, loved, loved it. Right until I sold my shotgun. I'm still crying over that, but mostly because to replicate the shotgun I built will cost a whole heap o' money. It costs a lot more to build stuff when you have to pay full retail instead of 10% above cost. Darn it all.
ReplyDeleteWhat barrel is that? RemChoke or smooth bore?
ReplyDeleteAlso, what's the reason for bases up in the side saddle?
ReplyDeleteI read in some magazine years ago to go bases down. Then to load you pull the shell down with the off hand and then you just move it forward into the tube.
I tried it at the range and it seemed to work well.
Not saying it's the only right way. Just curious as to your choice.
I don't know about Tam, but I've always been a tad leery of bases down, because I figure is a shell can shift a half an inch (which I've seen, and not just with cheap Chinese plastic crap), it can slip all the way out.
ReplyDeleteIn the end, if the fractions of a second you save by storing them base down become important, you're either on the national circuit, or you're going to lose the gunfight anyway. If reload speed is that critical to your plan, consider a box mag fed shotgun.
But then, I'm not a "shotgun guy", despite having a Mossy 500 fully kitted in the gun closet that used to be the house longgun.
Wondering what your capiacity is w/ that mag extension....20" barrel?
ReplyDeleteFor a mag tube clamp and sling swivel, you want one from Choate Machine Tool, Part # 55-08-01. $10.60. Call them up and they'll mail it and save you quite a bit on shipping.
ReplyDeleteI have bases down for speed reloads, bases up for combat reloads.
ReplyDeleteThey are spendy, but I don't think there's a better light for the end of my universal translator than the surefire forend.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm no shotgun guy either. I might take mine out of its hiding place and shoot it once a year just to make sure it works.
ReplyDeleteStill waiting for the TEST REPORT ON THE MAGPUL BUTTSTOCK!!1!
ReplyDeleteNot that there's that much of a hurry, since the SGA for the Mossberg won't be out for a few more months.
Man... I think there might be a great crossover marketing opportunity here if they were to rebrand as "Black Mesa Tactical". :D
ReplyDeleteGeodkyt: When I had shotshell loops on my vest o' many pockets, "brass down" made more sense because if I was pulling from the bottom, the vest was held in tension against my shoulders. Pulling "up", as it were, mostly tended to lift the bottom edge of the vest up.
ReplyDeleteAbout as far as I can figure on the sidesaddle, it seems like it might be marginally less awkward to grab them from either side of the gun that way, presuming you leave it welded to your shoulder, held in place by the foregrip hand.
But I don't actually have a shotgun with a sidesaddle, so I might be talking out my ass there too. :D
My comment got ate on my own blog!
ReplyDeleteScott J,
20" cyl smoothbore slug bbl. The bases on the two 000B shells were up because that was the way I always did it so they wouldn't fall out. I added the other two just to take the picture. I'll be going to brass down because faster for gun games.
Murphy's Law,
As it stands, I'm probably going to go with the Magpul clamp for ease of use with the existing sling setup.
JohnInMD,
Factory 4-shot mag with a +2 Scattergun Technologies extender for a total of 6+1.
Drang,
I'll put that review up here before too long. :)
Nice setup! :-)
ReplyDeleteVery nice indeed. Where's the bayonet supposed to go?
ReplyDeleteRabbit, on the M1 Garand. Or being Tam, on one (or all) of the Moisin-Nagants.
ReplyDeleteI put the shells in brass down. That way your hand is already oriented to load. And being a lefty, I've discovered that combat loading a pump is one of the few things a sinistral tendency is superior for.
Brass down fer folks that practice twice a year, if that.
ReplyDeleteMost ranges don't like 00b or slugs in their boards.
I've got a six slot Sidesaddle on my Benelli. I alternate up/down, starting with up at the rear for left hand trigger finger resting space.
ReplyDeleteI do it this way so I can get a good grip on the shell. Fast loading orientation doesn't matter, if you can't get it out quickly.
I just put the original integral pistol grip/buttstock back on after shelving it soon after purchase, near 20 years ago. I can't shoot the standard style stock right handed, due to limited mobility of the wrist. Did all my training shooting from the left shoulder using the std stock, so I'm not sure it's worth the swap.
Any opinions on the usefulness of the PG/stock over the standard?
Unfortunately, the recoil spring assy fits inside the butt, so MagPul can't make their design work on the Benelli.
Here's my rig I originally had the rifle sight 20 inch with RemChoke on it. I liked the flexibility that gave me.
ReplyDeleteI had to let go of the barrel as part of a trade.
When it came time to replace I discovered Remington seems to have discontinued that barrel. My next choice was that 20" smoothbore but then I discovered the 18 inch with tritium sights so I went with that.
I use bases up for Slugs and bases down for Shot size 5-6 and Buckshot
ReplyDeleteDo they make one of them fancy fore ends for a model of ought five Remington Automatic?
ReplyDeleteMany ninjas of Tres-Gun recommend against the barrel clamp as I can throw your slug zero out of whack.
ReplyDeleteUs coachgunners don't need no steenkin' barrel clamps. ;)

I've used the 870 extended tubes when Uncle (and y'all, thank you)was providing my war-shotguns, but came to dislike the way the extension impeded routine cleaning. Otherwise it looks a lot like one of my own 870's.
ReplyDeleteBoat Guy,
ReplyDeleteAll things considered, I'd have preferred the single-shot extension, (and then only for ease of performing 'select slug' drills) but the chance to shoot another big 3 Gun match came up and, lacking a dedicated gamer gauge, I went with the longer tube.
The extra capacity makes for better gamin, that's for sure. Maybe I'm compensating by using the six-round saddles...
ReplyDelete"Select Slug" drills. This is the most likely failure point in shotgun gaming scenarios. As often as it seems to occur in competition, I wonder how it fairs in real life incidents.
