Overheard in the Office...

RX: "Apparently the Confederate... er, Commemorative Air Force..."

Me: "Confederate."

RX: "What?"

Me: "Confederate. You had it right the first time."

RX: "I thought they changed it?"

Me: "That's what they wanted you Yankees to think."

RX: "Whatever."
(Me, later: "Did you hear the DHS spent hours chasing a Cracker u-boat around New York the other day?")

  2. On the other hand, I was once part of a warbird flying club in Minnesota called the Union Air Force. They had a B-25 that was "almost" airworthy, A T-6 that was flyable, A BT-13 that I got a few hours of dual in, and an Aeronca Champ that I got quite a few hours in before I got my own Chief.

  3. torpedo (n): 1. A cigar-shaped, self-propelled underwater projectile launched from a submarine, aircraft, or ship and designed to detonate on contact with or in the vicinity of a target.

New York tollway (n): an expanse of concrete and asphalt that is not conducive to water-borne attacks.

Giant iron model bolted to trailer (n): A historical replica of a Civil War submarine that was nefariously re-designed to twist Yankee panties into awkward and pube-plucking knots.

  4. Many years ago, my uncle, cousin, and myself were headed north towards Midland after a week of deer hunting down towards Sanderson. We were to catch a flight out the next morning to head home to Calif.

At my suggestion, we headed for the CAF base. We arrived a it more than an hour before closing, so I further suggested we make a bee-line for the hanger. Wow. The memories have faded a bit, but I still remember comming through the door and looking up at their B-29 FiFi, at the time undergoing what appeared to be a major over haul. Props, flaps, and sundry other major components scattered all around. Also remember a cut-away of a Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major from a B-36.

  5. "Cracker U-Boat" is a perfect example of a Tamism. :-)

  6. Aren't New Yorkers smart? Just ask them they will tell you how smart they are.

  7. I've seen stuff on the road that looked more like torpedoes than that thing.

Hell, I've helped build things that went down the road that looked more like torpedoes than that thing. The first thought I had when I saw the picture was, "They thought a big heat exchanger was a torpedo?"

  8. That's what happens when Big Sis says "If you see something, say something." The additional qualifier "smart" is nowhere in that instruction.
Perhaps a bunch o' folks hauling around slightly modified water heaters could just DHS wear out...

  9. NYC ask for $50 million in DHS grants to guard against land borne submarine attacks!
