Speaking of the YB-49...

...about halfway down the page here is a picture of one overflying the Capitol. (Sadly, it did not proceed to bomb Congress.)

Also, plenty of tales from the YB-49 program.

  1. Cooooooool.

Somewhat related, the tale of the Air Force showing a near-death Jack Northrop a scale model of (what would become) the B-2 will never fail to mist my eyes up.

  3. Kevin,

To anyone familiar with how the Secret Service works, that story doesn't pass the smell test. We're definitely getting one side of it.

  5. In the original movie version of War of the Worlds...I love how they use a YB-49 to bomb the martians...cause it was "the future" of the Air Force or something. Way cool...and way ahead of it's time.

I love the B-2...but I wonder how many B-1's they could have built for the same money...or how many B-52's they could have rebuilt. Just cause you CAN do something...doesn't mean it makes sense to do it...

  7. The cartoon in question is on the internet.

Some retard cut it in half and sent only the half with Airforce One pocked full of holes to the SS, and not the whole thing.

  8. That story about the YB-49 stall problem will make your sphincter tighten.

    Flipped over backwards in flight?
    Yikes.

  9. DJ:
To learn that Edwards decided to go out and play with that problem, and took a crew with him, was sad.

  10. Ooh, I loves me some weird wonderful dangerous airplanes. Did you know, that with some strategic folding and snipping, ans a bit of ballast, you can make an excellent glider out of a Hollerith card?
