Ran fifty rounds of that steel-cased TulAmmo stuff through the Glock 19 on Sunday and so I swung by my Wally-World ammo fishin' hole to see what the situation was like...
No rimfire, no revolver calibers, a few boxes of .40 and .45 Federal FMJ, and about a half-dozen boxes each of Federal and TulAmmo 9x19. I bought my three-box-per-customer limit of the Federal at what would have been a decent price for .45 a year or two ago.
It's definitely getting to be about time to set up the press again.
I was pleased to note that rifle and shotgun ammo was largely back to normal levels.
This past weekend at the funshow, sales on ammo wee down. I carried home a lot that didn't sell, where at the April show, I couldn't get enough to sell.
ReplyDeletePretty much the same here. I'm using my personal stock of factory ammo for students.
ReplyDeleteYou have handgun ammo!? At any price!?
ReplyDeleteOur Wally-World here still has nothing for handguns. There's a couple token boxes of 30-06 SPRG and .300 Win Mag, but it's an otherwise empty cabinet.
Only thing I've been seeing is 7mm and 300WM and single boxes of .22 short for $7.
ReplyDeleteShelves here are still bare, be it WallyWorld, Mountain of Geese, or Farm & Fleet.
ReplyDeleteMay have to retreat to the reloading room for a week or three, w/ample amounts of Naproxen and Mountain Dew in tow...
Just got back from my closest WallyWorld.
ReplyDelete1 box per transaction, 3 box per day. Got 2 boxes of AA 12ga. low recoil at a good price.
Not a handgun round in sight...
I haven't even tried to look at the ammo shelf at Wally World. I've been rediscovering reloading (at these prices I may as well reload my range ammo) and even scored a Dillon 550 a couple weeks ago.
ReplyDeleteI'm well set for powder, bullets are easy enough to obtain locally, and not too bad off for cases. Primers are kind of catch as catch can- they're around, but only able to get 200-500 at a time depending on stock levels.
Ammo supplies are beginning to come back, but prices are still rather high... the days of getting .45 for under 35 cents/round shipped to my door appear to be over.
Things aren't that bad around here...you can still only find .22 and 9mm on the days it is delivered, but other than that, most stores actually have a stock of .223 and 7.62 X 39. Prices are still high though...I wanted to pick up some .243 to finally sight in my daughters birthday gift, and the cheapest stuff Ranch and Home had was $35 a box.
ReplyDeleteI try not to shoot too much of that Russian stuff - the bimetal jackets seem to be hard on barrels:

Still, I suppose barrels are easier to find right now than 9mm ammo.
Scored three bricks of Remington 22's at Wally's World this morning !
ReplyDelete$18 bucks per no less...
The drought seems to have settled in Md. for the long haul. Esp. .22lr, haven't seen ANY around here.
ReplyDeleteAnd a safe INDEPENDENCE DAY to all......
Archer, contact me for your needs.
ReplyDeleteMulliga, there's a reason Russians chrome plate the innards of their weapons. Steel cases, plus the lack of obturation back of the neck, are the reason for the wicked taper on AK/StG44 type weapons.
ReplyDeleteThat, and the huge lugs on the AK. Savage shock loading on the AK bolt. A cylindrical case obturates nicely along it's full length, grabs the chamber walls at full expansion, and actually helps hold things together during peak pressure, instead of backing up like a sledge hammer.
That being said, I use TulAmmo 45acp to break in tight extractors on 1911's. The stuff has a slightly thinner rim, and is abrasive as hell. With a good feed ramp angle, that hook polishes in on the second or third magazine.
Dirty crap, and not usually much in the accuracy department, but with the big bullet the .45 usually shoots better than most even with grade two ammo. Plus, it's cheap(er), and usually available.ageoppo
I was able to buy three boxes of 9mm at my local Wal-Mark's a couple of months ago. I haven't seen any since then.
ReplyDeleteMulliga, check out Caleb's Tula Ammo (and HAP) test. He didn't find any negative effects to the barrel or extractor in his testing of 11,000 plus through his G21.
Mulliga,
ReplyDeleteThe effect isn't nearly as bad at a third of the velocity.
Although I generally avoid the stuff, I'll use it in a pinch. In this case, it looked like I was going to run out of 9mm at gun school and so I purchased 75% of the 9mm ball available for sale in Rochester, IN, which is to say "3 boxes of TulAmmo at Wally-World.
When you get the press setup, be sure to blog details - make, model, quirks, likes, dislikes, etc. I appreciate your thoughts and impressions immensely.
ReplyDeleteI used to shoot it in IDPA alot. Probably ran close to 1,000 rounds of the stuff through my XD-9 over the past couple of years.
ReplyDeleteHopefully that wasn't too detrimental to my barrel.
