We stopped by the local Mountain of Geese while I was
hanging out with Brigid yesterday afternoon. It was
depressing. The selection in centerfire handgun ball ammo was thus:
- Winchester Super X .30 Mauser, ~$80/50rds
- American Eagle 10mm Auto, ~$50/50rds
- Remington .32 S&W Long, ~$35/50rds
There was about a case of each, spread out in a single 1-deep/1-high row
so that the thirty boxes covered the whole frontage of a single shelf.
I've never seen the like.
Cabelas has a pretty good deal of stuff on the shelves. And i can still get the normal calibers from Precision Cartridge, though his prices for the first time make me think of reloading.
ReplyDeleteMy independent local place has weathered the storm pretty well.
ReplyDeleteReloading supplies got scarce in March and April but have bounced back nicely.
Last time I was in there I even saw a couple boxes of M855 500 rounds for $309.
Da Geese is a dead store walking. Couldn't happen to a more deserving clothing store pretending to be a sporting goods store.
ReplyDeleteAmmo supplies are opening up around here, excepting .22 rimfire.
ReplyDeleteReloading supplies are playing catch up, with some powders and some bullets in short/no supply.
Not thrilled with the new price levels, but I reload everything so the sting is limited.
This could be the initial phase of Socialism in the USA, at least it looks like it. I still remember quite vividly that in the pre-1989 years every shop, every department store behind the Iron Curtain mostly consisted of bare shelves with only a few specimens of merchandise displayed.
ReplyDeleteI reload, but usually that's a "winter sport". Now looking at running up a batch of .38 Spl tonight for tomorrow's ritual plinking fest...'cause I'm betting there ain't much if any .38 on our shleves.
ReplyDeleteA few months back, the largest TRUE Firearms Store up here had .41 Remington Magnum, as much as you wanted.

ReplyDeleteJust picked up another 500 count box of the Speer 125gr cold swaged, moly coated 9mm plinker.
ReplyDeleteWhen I get those loaded I'll have 940 (used some of the last 500 for testing).
That will give me a nice cushion for practice and IDPA since .45 is my primary caliber for both.

Lord knows I put enough S&B 7.62 Tok through my Broomhandle back in the day...
Visited my local gun store the other day. Ammo on the shelf? Sure, if you wanted .40 ball or 7.62.
ReplyDeleteI was in Iowa this last weekend taking the kids to see the Grandparents and decided to stop into the local Fin & Feather.
ReplyDeleteI thought I had reached the promised land of ammo. Several shelves of a wide variety of .223, .308, & .22 LR. Just from looking I would say the only calibers he didn't have were ones for rifles that only 2-3 people own.
If it wasn't for shortage of funds I would have seriously thought of buyinig up the stock for my stash and for resale.
