Today was largely windshield time, passengering back to Los Alamos with Stingray and listening to a marathon of "Welcome to Night Vale" podcasts. Why had you people not told me about "Welcome to Night Vale" before? (And what does the style guide say we do with podcast titles? Quotes? Italics? I'm too lazy to look it up right this second, so I'm going with quotes for now.)
It was apparently ungulate season in the southern mountains. Saw this going up the road on Thursday:
On the way back, held up in the canyon just outside Taos by a delivery driver who was apparently trying to jackknife a prefab tool shed while backing it into a driveway, an old Jeep Cherokee covered in Mossy Oak, mud, lights, and Bone Collector stickers pulled up just behind us...
Me: "Hey, look! An actual Cletus!"
Stingray: (reading the decal across the guy's windshield by glancing in the rearview) "'Eat, Squeal, Hunt'? Nice."
Me: "It says 'Eat, Sleep, Hunt'..."
Stingray: "Oh."
Me: "...but I like yours better, though."
So, you saw my truck.
ReplyDeleteSo my Cherokee makes me a cletus?
ReplyDeleteWisconsin plates. Sometimes mule deer really does taste like mule. ;^)
ReplyDelete"So my Cherokee makes me a cletus?"
ReplyDeleteI think it was the various aftermarket decals that turned it into a Cletusmobile, not that it was a Jeep.
I am still in danger Rob. Got a gun manuf "Coexist" and a grumpy cat on the back.
ReplyDeleteMy most recent firearm purchase is a Cletus rifle. Bubbafied .308 Mauser in a cheap plastic stock, all spray painted desert tan, painted stock, painted barrel, painted action, painted bolt, everything painted except the scope and the top half of the scope rings. At least it shoots better than it looks.
ReplyDeleteSo Cletus and Bubba are the same species? I'm so confused ...
ReplyDeleteI had to comment just because the WV is so appropriate for Tam on her way back from Blogorado.

Robin,
ReplyDelete"So Cletus and Bubba are the same species? I'm so confused ..."
Cletus and Jasper are both Bubbas.
If the rear window of your Mossy Oak Jeep has so many "BONE COLLECTOR" stickers that you can't see out it and your roof and front bumper have lighting arrays that look like they were stolen from Yankee Stadium, then, well... ;)
Whew, that was close. No lighting array.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm too cheap for Mossy Oak branding...
So Cletus and Bubba are the same species? I'm so confused ...
ReplyDeleteThey're cousins, obvi.
jf
"They're cousins, obvi."
ReplyDeleteAnd brothers. And uncle and nephew.
Style guide for podcasts: Name of the podcast in italics, individual episodes in quotation marks, following the Chicago Manual of Style, more or less. Analogous to TV shows.
ReplyDeleteAny other questions, just ask. My copy of the Holy Book is always within reach ;)
We camp every year through NM. If you get a chance, the Red River meets up with the Rio Grande in Wild Rivers Recreation Area, just outside of Questa. As the area is roughly 800 ft. above the confluence, the view is spectacular.
ReplyDeleteThe Enchanted Circle is a gorgeous drive through Angel Fire, Eagle Nest, and Taos. Enjoy your trip!
I once had a chicharrones burrito smothered in green chile at the Questa Cafe. When I left I thought I was hallucinating.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip on Night Vale - love it so far, and I'm only up to episode 5. Imagine mixing up pteranodons and pterodactyls.
ReplyDeleteIf you aren't familiar with it, We're Alive is another good podcast for long trips. http://www.zombiepodcast.com/episodes/
