I'd really like to take a good shotgun class sometime in the coming year. Probably Awerbuck if at all possible, but I'm open to suggestions. It's nearing time to maybe take a refresher carbine class, too.
What I definitely do need is a good first aid class; specifically one that deals with what to do if I god forbid shoot myself while I'm on the range. (Or if someone else does while I'm there.) It's just a handy skill to have if you spend a lot of time handling guns.
I really really want to take ECQC. Very few classes are so highly spoken of by such a broad cross-section of the community. A class with Tom Givens is on my bucket list, too.
.
I've had Lou's shotgun class. It is money well spent. As far as, the 1st aid course, here in TN EMS courses are ran by the community college system. You might be able to audit the ones on trauma.
ReplyDeleteI've taken 3 Graham Combat classes now: pistol, pistol/carbine, and shotgun. You will not be disappointed. You'd have to travel to Virginia or Washington State (he teaches on both coasts) but it would be worth it.
ReplyDeleteExcellent teacher, great guy. Seems to be pretty reasonably priced too.

Dark Angel Medical has come highly recommended for good IFAK courses
ReplyDeleteHow about I teach an advanced first aid course at Blogorado next year, or at the NRA Meeting? It would be layperson CPR, a little bit of burn care, airway maintenance, splinting and such, and a lot of stuff on wound care of penetrating trauma.
ReplyDeleteI could probably wrangle some range first aid kits from some vendors as well.
Cost would be free. It'll give me a readon to write off the trip on my taxes.
Dude, that would rock SO hard!
ReplyDeleteSrsly. Put your thinking cap on and lemme know.
ReplyDeleteAD,
ReplyDeleteIf you run a boo boos and blow outs course I'd be very very interested.
And while I never object to free I wouldn't have any problems with paying a few bucks either.
BGM
AD, if you could teach it at the NRA meeting my wife and I would happily take you up on it and but you a nice dinner.
ReplyDeleteI audited an ATLS course a while back. They won't let you "Take" the course unless you're an MD. it was pretty good. I have thought about taking the EMT course at night. There's some gory shit, but I've seen plenty of gory shit, I don't fluster that easy.
ReplyDeleteDamn, that sounds interesting. It would definitely be a nice addition to my Combat Survival First Aid/Buddy Care classes. (Don't laugh, I still carry tampons and feminine pads in my first aid kit...)
ReplyDeleteReal, formal training is a glaring hole I need to fill. If lurkers are invited, count me in. I even have money to pay for the training. :)
ReplyDeleteFirst Aid/EMT class you probably don't need.
ReplyDeleteFind a knowledgable medic with experience and have them give you a brief session.
If you want to learn how to plug extra holes, apply a TK, decompress a tension pneumo and splint/bandage, that would take a long day. Unless you want to learn the rule of 9s, birthin' babies, medical/legal and all the rest that goes with classes.
My ALS kit is distilled down from a 60# pack to a 1 gal ziplock bag. The big pack only goes if I'm headed out to BFE.
Tam,
ReplyDeleteI could mail you a 4-day class certificate for FrontSight, no charge, if that would help.
I can't comment on the current shotgun class, as I haven't taken it since Dale Fricke was their instructor, in the first year.
IIRC, they do charge a $50/year background check, even with a badge or ccw permit.
My wife is an LPN, and we keep looking for a good class to send her too...something along the lines of a 'Wilderness Medic' type course...it's more the time commitment than the money commitment that has prevented us doing it so far.
ReplyDeleteI've taken a 3 day TCCC course at the state EMS conference and the 2 day "Trauma Medicine for the CCW" from Dr Meade with Suarez. The TCCC course covers all the stuff that anyone can do outside an OR (TQ, wound packing, chest decompression, tracheostomy) but everything past applying a TQ and maybe wound packing involves a huge possibility of liability depending on your state. Plus you had to have an EMS card (1st responder works) to get into the course.
ReplyDeleteI thought the course by Dr Meade was more practical for people who are worried mostly about gunshot wounds and are not tactical medics with a PD. It was also more fun and better managed.
Awerbuck teaches in regular rotation at the indoor range I visit practically every week (Reed's in Santa Clara, CA) and I've been meaning to sign up for his shotgun curriculum. Definitely moving that up the priority list for training in 2014.
ReplyDeleteIm not sure if I can get the xact quote but, a famous internet guru who shot himself said"I followed my training and called my parents" I think Tam can handle a gunshot wound better.
ReplyDeleteDoc Gunn Tactical Treatment of Gunshot Wounds was a good introduction to using the Israeli Style Battle Dressing, relieving a tension pneumo thorax, and using a laryngeal tube for someone with blocked airways. Also pretty good review of shot placement; but they took 8 hours to teach 2-3 hours worth of material. FYI
ReplyDeleteI've taken Louie' pistol and carbine classes - yup, a shotgun class taught by Louie would be a worthwhile endeavor. Bill Jeans runs a good shotgun class, but he's retired :( - at least for now.
ReplyDeleteECQC is on my short list as well.
ReplyDeleteGunsite is offering a shotgun
ReplyDeletecourse in Lebanon, IN on June 27-29.
Carbine and pistol classes in April.
Doesn't look too far from you.
Why no ask Joe Biden for pointers?
ReplyDeleteTIL "Continuing Education" equates to "Christmas Wish List" for given values of "education."
ReplyDeleteThere is the standard Red Cross First Aid and the Wilderness First Aid add-on as a minimum for all around general confidence building for when everyone else is panicking, to a Basic EMT class, to an EMT-Paramedic training if you really want to step it up.
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime, call 911 and apply direct pressure on the wound site with the cleanest material you have to control bleeding.
Asking everyone at the range what their highest level of first aid training is may not be considered a confidence builder, but may be enlightening.
FYI, "The Duck" has been getting Tom Givens to come in to his place once a year or so.

Not too far from you...might check with him and see if he's going to do it again in '14.
Took my TN HCP course from Tom Givens. Love that man's delivery. Come to think of it, I took his basic shotgun class, too.
ReplyDeleteTom's a great instructor.
ReplyDeleteCheck out the courses at Lone Star Medics in Texas. EMT mixed with live fire training.
