  2. I have trace amounts of Scandinavian DNA, as do many people of Irish descent. Somewhere in the distant past, one of my ancestors' villages was probably raped and plundered by people who got the same feeling :)

  6. That's probably healthier than sitting around and moping...as long as you don't fall from a parapet.

  7. I wouldn't mind following some of my ancestors' footsteps and roll on into Hastings to hand out a world-class smackdown on some schmuck named Harold.

  8. Surely that's out of season... doesn't monastery-pillaging season run from June 8 to October 14?

  11. I feel your pain. I am sure I inherited it from my Scotch-Irish Ancestors, and my Red-headed Spouse would lead the charge. As I would not want to get in her way.

  12. After we catch some Celts, we can take a Mediterranean cruise and sell them to the Greeks or Arabs. Spend a nice warm winter there, hangout with the Byzantine Empresses, beat up her husband if he protests, kidnap her niece, and head back north with a boat full of wine and jewels.

  13. Ireland still has monasteries?

  14. If some folks are up for a bit of viking, there's this town up between Virgina and Maryland on the Potomac river...

  15. I'm guessing that a Light Box won't much help with that, LOL.

"Not really a hop- it took six miserable, cold, puking weeks:"

Why do you think they were so cranky when they got there? ;)

  19. Tam: more motivation for the plunder and pillaging.

  20. Why do you think they were so cranky when they got there? ;)

I thought it was because they were Norsemen and that was their default setting.

  24. Thanks!

Interesting reading - didn't know that Dalmatians were used as anything other than firehouse dogs . . .

About 700 Varangians served along with Dalmatians as marines in Byzantine naval expeditions against the Emirate of Crete in 902 . . .

    :-)

  26. Ed,

    Too many questions.
Just put on this pelt, try some of this mushroom stew, quaff some mead, and we can deal with any remaining questions (and/or questioners) after the raid.

  27. So far, Tam, I've got about 10 volunteers to go a viking with you.

  28. I'm part Irish and I feel that way most days.

The common factor seems to be the monasteries, not where we come from.
