The Narrative...

So the Florida legislature looks like they'll not be striking down the state's near-decade-old "Stand Your Ground" law.

In their reportage on the topic, Florida cable news station "Bay News 9" leads off the story with a picture of... some guy whose case had nothing to do with the "Stand Your Ground" law.

Ignorance? Agenda? Both? Hey, they report, I deride.

  1. Yep. No law should stand that gives the proles the idea they have rights.

It is looking so 70's out these days.

  2. I remember the 70s. Good times, with the ignoble end of the Vietnam War, gas lines, cardigan sweaters, US impotence in the face of dictators (both tinhorn & religious), backyard communist insurgency, interest rates so high federal student loans could be put in CDs for a profit, and a self-righteous president who insisted we needed to do it his way.

Instapundit used to joke that Obama would be the worst president since Carter, now he says that being as bad as Carter would be an improvement for our Dear Leader. I agree.

  3. Mikee,

As I recall, the front end of the 70's wasn't to terrible, but the back half sucked rocks.

  4. The original "Star Wars" was released in the late 70's so things weren't all bad.

  5. They aren't WRONG when they say that SYG has been much discussed since Zimmerman. It has been discussed... by a bunch of people who are ignorant about what SYG does, and who don't pay attention to the fact that SYG wasn't used in Zimmerman's defense.

To further point out the ignorance, the backers of this "" are calling for legislation that:

"would require a full investigation for any "Stand Your Ground" defense."

Duh... that already happens, in spite of the lies from the anti-freedom, anti-self defense left.

  7. What was that old Russian saying from the Cold War? That there's NO "Truth" in Pravda and there's NO "News" in Tass?

Well, since it seems that most of today's "Journalists" seem to have gotten their Degrees from Moscow State...

  8. Regarding the Russian saying - "Pravda" is the Russian word for "truth", and also was the newspaper for the Communist Party. "Izvestiya" was the word for "news" and the name of a Moscow newspaper. Both newspapers and their content were government controlled. So the saying loosely translated was that "there is no news in "The Truth" and no truth in "The News".

Back to Bay News 9 - some confuse the duty to retreat if possible as required in the laws of several states and that is not required under Florida's "Stand Your Ground Law" with the right to self-defense which exists independent of Florida's "Stand Your Ground Law". Some would extend the non-required "duty to retreat" to complete avoidance of any activity that could result in conflict, suggesting that George Zimmerman should have cowered in fear in his residence instead of being outside in his neighborhood. "Stand Your Ground" did not apply to George Zimmerman because once he was attacked and knocked to the ground he was unable to retreat due to the actions of Trayvon Martin. However, George Zimmerman still had the right to use deadly force in self-defense. This was explained by the defense attorneys via their questioning of the use of force expert witness and in the judge's instructions to the jury that found him "Not Guilty" on all charges. The sad truth is that Trayvon Martin could have chosen to avoid violent conflict but did not. This is not news to many, but continues to be news for some. 225

  9. Read Florida Statutes 776 – "Justifiable Use of Force" to see that "Stand Your Ground" is a small component of the law:
