The purpose of the internet...
For all the long chain of technological evolution; the blood, sweat, tears, and treasure; that went into developing the internet, all so that I could read this phrase...
"Boffin" is one of those words that allow you to know the intended audience right away; in its case, working-class Brits of the type seen in "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels."
The purpose may be to provide Bulwer-Litton contest level prose to your monitor, but improvements to the internet run on naughty pictures and lewd videos, with not a bit of truly obscene Obamacare thrown in.
Gee. We have progressed from the Romans collecting urine to process wool and to clean grease spots on fabric to collecting urine for the nitrates to manufacture munitions to collecting urine to power robots. Yup. That's progress for ya.
@GVI, nah, "boffin" is quite classless. It's just general-purpose slang for an engineer at the cutting edge of something. If anything it's an ever-so-slightly old fashioned term now.
@Mikee, ironically, Edward Bulwer-Lytton was a contemporary of Dickens and was quite highly thought of in his day. There's actually a website somewhere that provides some paragraphs from both and challenges you to guess who wrote what. (Believe it or not, B-L could write beautifully well and Dickens penned some real stinkers.) It's rather tragic that Bulwer-Lytton wrote one bad bit of prose and that's all he's remembered for today.
Well yeah, that and cat pictures.
ReplyDeleteHey buddy, got a piss for an old soldier?

ReplyDeleteTam,
ReplyDeleteThe headline in the right sidebar deserves honourable mention .
"Lohans mighty thruster poised for hot coupling ."
I thought she was still in jail.

ReplyDeleteAnd now that I know this, my life is complete.
