Ell. Oh. Ell.

I hate open carry so much that I did it all over New Mexico in October.

How one can go through life with such a huge persecution complex?

Get down off the cross, Marty; these other kids here need the wood to build a treehouse.

  1. You OC'd in Colorado in October too, didn't you?

  2. I'll pass on the "strongly principled alliance". Particularly one that asks me to "massage" or "tweak" my specific beliefs.

I mean I definitively like Jews, but in order to achieve a STRONG, UNYIELDING, PRO 2ND AMENDMENT MESSAGE, I might need to massage that belief.

    OR NOT.

This isn't an US versus THEM kind of argument and THEY really seem like idiots.

  3. But you don't carry AT people, ergo, you're not pure in your devotion to the Movement, ergo, you're a closet gun banner and a likely communist.

  4. I personally dislike open carry for the same reason I won't tape $100 bills around my belt. It makes me unnecessarily obvious to people who might want the cash and prizes and who don't HAVE to attack from the front. I would have to be more paranoid than normal and already people talk about me.

  5. Frankly, with your build, you could open carry a bazooka and 2/3 of humans with testicles would not be able to point out the bazooka.

    Sorry. Shoulder Fired Grenade Launcher.

Which is probably want they desperately want. Drama queens. Also unclear on the concept.

  8. In a way, open carry is like walking around with your zipper down. It causes a reaction, and many times it's not good.

    ReplyDelete
  9. The concept is that strutting around in a SERPA and a pistol you'll never compete nor train with, will magically make the US populace just OK with open carry. In practice, it's silly strutting and looking for lawsuits against cops.

  10. Tam, or someone it's not entirely clear, now also hates the handicapped. Just because the first amendment protects you ability to act like and idiot and subvert your own cause doesn't mean you have to take advantage of it.

  11. Tam, sometimes you're brilliant and funny.

Sometimes you're just a bitch, and that was one of those times.

  14. Tam was actually only reiterating what a lot of us have been saying about open carry. Like Caleb, for instance. (Mariner, you might want to re-read his Rule #1.)

  15. OC-ers,

We're not against you. In fact, you are the most visible element of the 2A movement. The ONLY reason we give a whit about your behavior is that it affects all of us. When Starbucks uninvites us, it's because of the antics of a few Cousin Eddies (who were open carrying AT people). When Moms Looking For Action looked to vilify gunowners, they picked on the open carriers.

This visibility is the reason that the prime directive is that you behave yourself. You stand out by not standing out. You normalize the behavior by being normal.

We're all trying to succeed here. Put the gun back in the holster and realize we're on your side.

    Shoot well,

  17. Sometimes I really have to wonder whose side the OC people are on.

Sadly, I often have to conclude they're on the gungrabbers side when I hear about idiots like the segway guy.

I see people OC around Vegas form time to time well off the strip and I've not yet seen one that was carrying at people. There are some who think its cute to go and try to carry at people in Casinos and on the strip and thats not cool.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Remember that it wasn't just the segway bit that that was odd but the whole presentation. The "within safety parameters" bit really stuck out at me as weird. Perhaps this guy is legitimately handicapped and needs the segway but it certainly was not presented as such.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Once again let's ALL "know" about "those OC people".
As I've noted on here several times before I carry openly a goodly part of the year simply because I don't wish to bother with a "gun burka" (GREAT term Tam).
I'm presuming when y'all are talking about "carrying AT people" you mean horizontal shoulder rigs or something that has the muzzle pointed AT people, right? Or are you referring to folks who are pushing boundaries?
I dunno and it doesn't much matter to me; I'm gonna carry when and as I please, y'all can deal with it or not.

  26. I can carry OC or concealed without a permit. I don't OC, or do anything else for a political statment. Occaisionally the tourists get the vapors when they see someone carrying legally. Most times it may draw a question about the holster or sidearm in it.

If I am going about my daily business in town it is usually time for concealed carry. If I am hunting or beating about the desert, open carry is more practical. Twice OC has made a difference. Once I was able to provide assistance to a young lady who decided my armed presence was better than the thugs making her nervouse (I hung around until the police arrived). Another time it made me a target of some young gangsters. CC or OC, it is a personal choice and I prefer living places where either is acceptable.

"I'm presuming when y'all are talking about "carrying AT people" you mean horizontal shoulder rigs or something that has the muzzle pointed AT people, right? Or are you referring to folks who are pushing boundaries? "

It's the difference between going to the store to buy groceries while you happen to be wearing a gun, because wearing a gun is what you do, and strapping on your biggest hogleg and using going to buy a pack up gum as an excuse to march up and down the aisles at the Piggly Wiggly with a gat.

If you haven't met one of the latter type, you are a fortunate man indeed.

  30. Tam,
You're a sweetheart. XO. that should help cancel out the rude dude comments above.

    To the naysayers:
I always carry. Concealed, open, big gun, little gun, one gun, two guns, hell even three guns sometimes. Whatever I think suits the occasion and my mood.

I open carry with some frequency. -Whenever I darn well feel like it and mainly for convenience of having my defensive tool just as handy as when I'm on the ranch. Why change rigs to sooper secret concealed when I'm just going in town for supplies??

And I'll admit I OC sometimes just to piss off the libtards. ;-) Maybe I should put a notch or two in the ones with wood grips and really give the libtards and anti-OCers something to squirm about. Heh.

I don't give a rat's petunia about making a statement or causing little miss soccer mom to freak out. That's her problem0. By the way, nobody is forcing those who don't want to carry at all or open carry to carry an eee-ville gun thingy. You all can count on the cops showing up in seconds when the criminal demands your money or car, it's your call.

For those of you who don't like it, since I'm not threatening you in any way and not bothering you, STFU and leave me the hell alone. It's still in the holster, ain't it???

Is that too much to ask, to just leave me ALONE? Well, if it is, get a life and find something constructive to do besides complaining about others just going about their business.

  33. I like the term “carrying AT people.” It sums it up about as nicely as I’ve ever heard it summed up. Well done, Tam.

By the by, it occurs to me that there is a very apt comparison that I’d very much like these OC@ folks to consider:

When you see a gay man wearing a penis hat and walking around town in assless chaps agitating for gay rights, does that make you more likely to support gay rights, or less?

The difference between OC@ and just regular OC is the difference between assless chaps boy in public, or two gay men holding hands in public. One is intended to be a controversial, aggressive, “in-your-face” and offensive public display, which, IMHO, is a nasty thing to do. The other is intended to be folks going about their daily life doing things the way they want to do them, which is not a nasty thing to do.

Either example could bring out the same reaction in an anti-gay bigot, but in that case, I would feel a lot more sympathetic to the gay couple holding hands than I would the assless chaps guy.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Goddamn it. Here I thought I was being all original and profound with my comparison to gay pride parading, and then I read the original post on this topic and discovered I'm way behind the 8 ball.

    1. It's become part of the nomenclature used to describe a person wearing chaps with nothing under them. I recognize that the term is redundant but its how english speaking individuals in the year 2013 get the point across that his bare ass is hanging out. Incorrect technically, yes, but the popular way of communicating the concept, nonetheless.

WTF...I've gone back and read the posts. Tam expressed her opinion. You may not agree with it, but at no time was she being a byatch. But then, maybe my standard is pretty high for honoring someone with that designation. I work with some real winners...

And yes, Tam, I know. You can defend yourself...sorry...apologies, etc. :-)

  39. anonymous: Yes, we are anti-Segway.

    Glad to clear that up.

I do open carry when convenient ... but I make a point of not trying to deliberately scare the white people.

If you want attention while doing OC, try something useful, like that Free State New Hampshire girl who was OCing while topless.

As for the actual content of the thread? Bollocks and whining from bowsprit to fantail. Ideological purists have about as much attraction as monkeys in a zoo - fun to watch but poor company come poo-flinging time.

  42. From the thread in question:"Just FYI, people often call the [grocery store] handicapped scooter a segway ...
Do you not have good impressions of the handicapped?
    "

I can't figure out if this is a victim-card ploy or a cognitive problem. You can call your Ford Fiesta a "Honda Goldwing" if that makes you happy, but calling it that doesn't make it so.

Incidentally, I know exactly one person who uses a (real) Segway for a physical handicap. Many of the people in those electric scooters would not be able to operate a real Segway for any useful length of time.

First off, nothing wrong with the SERPA- I'm tired of the illogical hate of it.

Second, you don't know if people don't train with the holster and gun.

Third, its not silly to exercise your rights, and if need be force lawsuits to protect them. Its also not silly to get people to see that gun owners are normal folk. Yes, some people don't do it the right way (dress terrible, carry rifles)- but you are slandering a whole group of people without logic. You know who else does that? Anti gunners.

And the actions of Derpy the Segway Toter are normal to you? Carrying an M1A to the eye doctor?

  50. People who wear chaps with nothing on under them do so for a particular reason, and many can be found frequenting the Fulton Street Fair in the fair city of San Francisco as an exercise of their particular rights. And they might also be found in such garb operating a Segway if "operating" might be considered a verb or a noun.

  52. Just spent 3 days in (for me) mandatory Concealed Carry while helping my friend empty her shop after going out of business. The shop's in about the shittiest neighborhood in the area ( NE 23 + ML King in OKC) and she's trying to clear a few bucks by selling fixtures and such. The maggots are crawling around looking for bargains and the predators are sniffing blood and I'm begging just about anyone to come with us to have a couple extra bodies around because lone targets are victims and fuck if I want to have a pistol on my hip openly because a well organized gang can cope with that and get a couple hundred I'm sure for my gat and some cigs for the story. My plan is to be a snap trap and pray I can act before thugs numbering 4+5 become aware that a "victim" has risen to the level of predator. I'd have paid a lot not to have to deal with that at all. As the wise man sayeth "A friend in need is a pain in the ass". But I'm not bailing and my friends are what I have. Open carry is mostly a a fake issue, like the War on Women or food fears. Open Carry is ridiculous bilge, a first world problem or worse. It is bad advice to carry openly, alone and unaware, in urban and particularly in dangerous urban environments without continuous awareness of your surroundings. Preferably with armed friends nearby.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Excellent point, Tom - it requires a high degree of security to safely open carry. The bad guys already have the initiative, if you surrender surprise as well you probably ought not be there at all.

  54. The biggest reason I carry concealed is that I carry a Glock 19 with an RMR and a light on it. Do you think I want people to know that I'm blind and carry an ugly gun?

  57. Count me in the "anti Segway" column. I cannot remember the number of times some Segway-renting tourist has almost run my ass over down in the Florida Gulf Coast.

Which brings me to an interesting nexus of OC'ing guns and Segways...if I was able to OC a small Gatling Gun in Florida, would the Segway riders still try to run me off the running paths, or would they be more likely to steer clear?

That alone would probably make me an OC advocate.
