Tab Clearing...

I usually have two Wikipedia tabs open at any given time, but lately there have been four, and they've been open to the same things for as much as a week or more now because I've been meaning to fall down the wikihole on each of them and just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I need at least two of the tabs for something else, but I'd lose them if I bookmarked them, so I'll just put them here for my future reference...

  1. Hey, this space is for free ice cream, not reference materials :)

  2. Some wonderfully scholarly footnotes in the Lad Culture entry.

By "wonderful" I mean... well, if anybody isn't clued in as to how tendentious and labored academics in the social "sciences" are, he won't figure it out here. Gnats being strained at mightily there. This sentence jumped out at me:

Lad culture has attracted criticism from feminist circles.

Sorry, my response to that was "Well, what hasn't?"

  4. Widescreen monitor means I can have fifteen tabs open at once! So I do!

  5. Why not just open a window specifically for wiki tabs?

  6. According to 23andme.com, my DNA is 3.1% Neanderthal, which puts me in the 97th percentile.

    Grunt!

  8. Really want to fall down the hole, on the Neanderthal page follow the links for Homo heidelbergensis and read about the 7+ft tall giants with bigger brains than us.

After those pages and Cro-Magnon, tell me we aren't Homo domesticated - just devolved dumb weak versions of our ancestors.

  9. When did the H come back into Neanderthal? Am I the only one who remembers that the academics used to insist that the word was Neandertal? It was actually a sign of a non-scientist if you used the H. Now it seems no one remembers this. Was I dreaming?

  10. Oh, Lad Culture is easy. A "Lad", in this sense, is what the English call a spanner*. All you need to know is Football (soccer), beer, pornography and the inability to think.

*Believeitornot, "spanner" actually is a low-grade insult in this case. Applicable when the "spanner" in question has done something stupid, often coming to grief in the process.

"Take me to hospital, Dave; I've lost the end of a finger in the pub door."

    "Gary, you spanner..."

  11. So the English use "Spanner" as a noun where the Americans would have to make do with "as dumb as a bag of hammers" or some such? Kind of like "Fortnight" vs "Two Weeks" in terms of economy of utterance.

I did not know about the Posey War. Henry Ford, that old anti-semite, was right about one thing, "History books are bunk."

  12. Oh, and Neanderthal? It is spelled with the "H" in German, but the H is silent, as German speakers don't have the digraphs of "This" and "Then" in their arsenal of language sounds.
