"I need to speak to your web person..."

Big coyotes out in Greenwood.
You want to be careful where you put the fold in your web stories, or next thing you know, coyotes are dragging families into the bushes, never to be seen again.

  1. Well, 'yotes aren't that different in size from mountain lions, and there was the incident a few years back of the jogger in Colorado whose jogging outfit was discovered in mountain lion scat. . .

  2. My blacksmith had two "good" coyotes in the back of his truck this morning.

I guess the women folk will be safe for a while.

  5. Had a farmer stop me when we were out hunting them and lead us to an area on his place he wanted us to look for them. A pack had drug off a newborn calf. He wanted all coyotes ALL DEAD, NOW! According to a PBS documentary, the yote in Iowa/midwest/east is a cross between the now-extinct eastern grey wolf and the western coyote. Tough critters, hard to kill, darn smart.

  6. I beg to differ on the size comparison.

I came face-to-face with mountain lion once and I can tell you it was a LOT bigger than a scrawny old coyote.

We were both hunting at the time.
Fortunately, he wasn't hunting for me and eventually ran off.

This happened only a few miles from heavily populated suburbs.

  8. Those folks need bigger dogs.

Some friends living outside of LA had a 'yote get in their fenced yard with their two 90 lb. retired racing Greyhounds. They picked up what was left of the 'yote with the pooper scooper.

  9. Coyotes seem to "size up" to fit the available predatory niche. The ones back East are likely hybids (as noted) and are filling the "wolf" role, including working in packs as I recall. Nature abhors a vacuum.

    As do dachshunds.

  10. Snicker. People are focusing on the coyote aspect, not on the headline.

Well of course. It threatens their sheep syndicate.

  15. As a new resident of suburban Austin, TX, I got worried when one of our two cats did not show up to be let in one night.

Thinking that she was just enjoying the wide open spaces, the next day I let our other cat back out, and never saw him again, either.

The laughing yip yip yip of coyotes in the neighboring meadows late that night were a hint that we needed new cats. These somehow knew to stay near the house, inside the fence, and lived long happy lives.

Indeed. I did the same in the mountains of NC about 40 yrs ago. All I had were the two dogs with me and a single shot .22 with a broken extractor. Luckily, he wasn't interested in us and we parted on amiciable terms.

  17. The headline, and then the soft break would definitely lead one to believe that these coyotes have taken to dragging people off into the night.

Death in the long grass and all. Where’s Capstick when you need him?

In fact, this story is the same story we get all over the US at this time of year – hungry, late winter coyotes are turning Fifi the carpet dog into quick, easy calories.

By the by, it always strikes me as funny how it is generally the same group of people that tell me I’m awful for hunting and shooting coyotes for sport, who squall the loudest when Wile E. eats their little precious. They then ask animal control or someone to come in and kill the coyote, because it’s okay to kill them in revenge, but not for sport. Got that?

The fact is, no matter how many guys like me kill song dogs in this area, there will still be too many of the damned things, and they will still cause problems.

I has a little Ruger #1 in .243 that I load up with 75 grain hollow points for them. You go out into the woods and make yourself sound like something good to eat, and when they come into range, you kill them. When a cougar or a bear comes up to check you out, and the season is closed, you just hold still and hope they go away…

  18. Oh, and just to add to the convo...

    BIG coyote = 65 pounds.

    BIG cougar = 220 pounds.

    SMALL cougar = 100 plus

Bite force of cougar = 600% of that of a coyote

Claws of a cougar vs. coyote = No comparison

One of these things is not like the other.

I've killed maybe a hundred coyotes. I've never shot one that I couldn't lift with one arm.

The cougar I killed, I couldn't pick it up off the ground by myself. It took two of us to drag it out and it was heavier than any deer I've ever dragged.

    1. As hard as I try I can only master the distressed rabbit call. ;)

Creepy fact: some guys have been known to use the sound of crying newborns to call them in. One guy I talked to said it made him feel better about killing them. He figured it served them right.

  21. friends of mine swear by using beagle pups in a cage as bait. They say the coyotes love beagles and when the pup starts crying being all lonely and all the coyotes come running. They shoot them using red lights. But seems to me you would have beagles with a pretty bad "complex" later....lol

  22. I don't know about anyone else, but clipping on the screenshot to the right caused me to put on my Star Trek geek hat.

I really want to know where some theives found some Klingon targs and why GameStop is storing them?

It is also good to know criminal golfers are innocent in some areas like green arson.
