Even though they are rated for many tens of thousands of hours of operation (it's been joked that with the Comp M3 or M4 Aimpoints, you could issue a troop with a battery when he enlisted and give him another one if he decided to re-up) replacing them with the time change is cheap insurance that makes sure they have juice when you need 'em..
I recall that in one of the Callahan's stories, Spider Robinson had a character reflecting on how irrational it was for him to have been PO'd at having to get new batteries for his digital watch at 5 years, since the things were only supposed to be good for two. Still, you get used to having your watch run without having to wind it or something, and then it stops...

ReplyDeleteMy CompM4 might well work nearly forever on one AA, but one lithium AA every year, as you say, is astonishingly cheap insurance.

Ah. But optics on a carbine, being single-plane, still do something that illuminated irons don't, else I'd just use the illuminated irons that are also on them. ;)
ReplyDeleteHell, I bought a heavier optic than I really wanted to, just because of the "Buy a CR123 once a year" factor. (Compared to how many AA batteries I've thrown away sitting dead in unused flashlights, CR123s are actually cheaper.)
