Thanks to the video here, I went to look up the ocean sunfish, or mola, here. That's where I learned that the cartoonishly-harmless-looking-yet-Mini-Cooper-sized sunfish has long, clawlike pharyngeal teeth back in its throat, which are nothing compared to what a moray eel keeps back there.
I rather expect Geiger-esque oceanic fauna to come visiting after lights out tonight.
.
When an eel bites your nose and it fractures your toes, that's a moray.
ReplyDeleteOh good! New nightmare fuel
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a roly-poly fish head.
ReplyDeleteTake a gander of the Goblin Shark before hitting the rack.
ReplyDeletePleasant dreams.
When a fish in the reef bites your finger with teeth, that's a Moray.
ReplyDeleteEver seen the beak that octopus sport... yikes.
ReplyDeleteAh, much is explained. It's not the spice meatball sub that make you have such weird dreams, it's excessive wiki-wandering!
ReplyDeleteOcean Sunfish are REALLY cool critters, and yes surprisingly huge...tho most you see are only the size of a big-block V8 rather than a mini-cooper...but I've seen them too.
ReplyDeleteStill look up Monkfish, they're the king of pharyngeal teeth and Geiger-esque sea life!
Still they're tasty too!
Reading the part about how they get cleaner fish and birds to rid them of parasites, I had this vision of a deleted scene in The Little Mermaid where one of 'em sidles up to a seagull and goes, "Hey! Buddy! Little help here?".
ReplyDeleteRobert, or maybe a future sequel to Finding Nemo!
ReplyDeleteWhen I had my lobster boat, we used to call them the Mongoloid fish. My old hometown in MA had a harbormaster that was famous for responding to a 'shark' siting by shooting his .38, reloading and shooting the shark again as it sat under the surface. My friends and I dragged a 2000+lb dead mola mola ashore a few days later. Died of acute lead poisoning. 12 .38 slugs got dug out of the poor toothless booger.
ReplyDeleteGood one, CG. How's this?
ReplyDeleteWhen-a da eel bite-a you face
'Cause-a you get inna his space,
"At's a Moray!
