Indy's Fox affiliate finally came up with one yesterday, to the effect of "OMG! With all the police-action shootings in our city this year, what are we to make of thousands of gun-toting NRA members coming to town?"
Perhaps unfortunate story timing on Fox59's part, since the biggest danger to IMPD officers yesterday, April 17th, turned out to be other IMPD officers.
As a side note, you'll note the further evidence that restraining orders still aren't bulletproof:
"Question is to whether or not she was safe, she was, in fact, we were protecting her. We also made sure with the protective order in addition to, provided protection to him," Hite said.Perhaps an unfortunate choice of words, Chief Hite.
So anyway, Fox59, I don't think you have much to worry about Cletus and Lurleen coming to town to "Ooh!" and "Ahh!" at Fudd guns; I think there's enough muck to rake right here inside the county line without having to look elsewhere.
.
The Chief is an idjit.

From an outsider's viewpoint, Hite's a big improvement on his predecessor, but that ain't saying much.
ReplyDeletePolice say there had been no incident reports at the Inishmore Court home in the past.
ReplyDeleteShe filed for divorce and was granted a restraining order, and he was ordered to turn in his service weapon, yet this was the first reported incident at their home? Pull the other one, it has bells on it.
Maybe you have to be drinking the water in Indianapolis for it to make sense, but I can't quite parse what Hite is saying. He was protecting both of them (her from him and him from him, I guess.) And they are both dead. May I be spared from such protection.
ReplyDeleteAndy, would you believe . . . no prior written reports? "No record of prior reports"?
ReplyDeleteNo paperwork?
BTW, Tam, we just had a local cop arrested for DUI. First time in memory. Local cop buddy at my gym commented, "That guy's a fucking alcoholic anyway."
Well . . . yeah, OK, I can see how that goes along with DUI. Should I go ahead and assume that this means he messed up his tenth chance to go kick the habit quietly after getting a break for DUI, and somebody finally lost patience? 'Cause that's how it sounds.
Um . . . wow. Well, anyway, it's good to know she was safe and that they were using technology to be sure of it.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, she could've been murdered or something.
On the other hand, people who are howling that the officer suspected of murdering his wife was being coddled are perhaps blissfully ignorant of how the system works. In my experience, using any kind of electronic monitoring system, however easily eluded, to make an effort to monitor whether someone is honoring an order of protection is way above and beyond what I've ever seen done. I'm not a cop, but my impression is that most OOP's are enforced as best they can be based on reports from the victim--if you don't call and report that the subject of the OOP is breaking in, no cop has any way of knowing you want or need help. If the information in this article is accurate, it sounds like the OOP was standard or better than standard. That's just not very much protection in any case.
Well, they might have a point.
ReplyDeleteYou see, both NJT AND Myself are planning on attending.
Commencing Indianapolis Evacuation in Three, Two....
I think the IMPD International Drinking Team will stay the hell away from people with guns at the NRA meet, so that should deal with any police violence issues.
ReplyDeleteSober members of the IMPD are more than welcome to attend.
Locally we just had a county sheriff's deputy fired for covering for a fellow cop being DUI. (IIRC, he called the drunk's wife and said "Come get your husband, he's sick".) The plural of anecdote is not data, of course, but one may hope that this sign that some agencies have a clue what ethical behavior means is not isolated.
ReplyDeleteWasn't too much Fuddery on display at last year's Convention in Houston. Got to coon finger a lot of tacticool toys like a prototype VCOG, an RMR on a GLOCK, an MP5SD and a few FNS pistols. Also got to talk a bit with the president of CMMG. Ask him about the pig spear hunting story...
ReplyDeleteWe need "View from the Porch - The Tamara Crew" t-shirts for everyone to wear at the convention.

Kerry:
ReplyDeleteHow about "Tam's Coonfinger Crew" on the back, with only the choice of "Cletus" or "Lurleen" on the front?
Bellevue Wa. PD (Eastside Seattle Suburb across the lake) just fired an officer that didn't arrest a fellow officer (known and demoted problem child) for DUI. Didn't even perform field sobriety tests, get a Breathalyzer on scene, or call his Sargent. Turning in a CYA report a week later wasn't enough to save his sorry but. Now BPD is down two officers.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking it'll be interesting to see the coverage once we're there... :-)
ReplyDeleteInteresting post - could you email me when you get a chance? Thanks.
