There's one of those around here, except it's the pickup truck variety. Weird as hell, but it looks like it's been nicely restored, so at least someone is loving it.
Ah, great memories. The only van I have driven long distances in bitter cold winters where you could repair the engine without leaving the cabin. Ask me about failed dropping resistors and sheared distributor gear pins (upstate NY in January)
In the art dept of the U I finally graduated from (some time ago and for about five minutes) I knew a woman who had a van like that. She rearranged the letters of two of the Dodge badges to make one that read ODD.
Looks like the van my uncle drove that poisoned me with CO from the 'rotted out by winter' muffler and floorboard. To see that shitbox go away didn't break my heart at all.
The Econoline Pickup version had a huge weight mounted over the gas tank. They were seriously unbalanced without it. I'm told the Dodge versions had to do the same thing, to be drivable.
I suspect they were copies of the VW Pickup, but those had a rear engine, so weight distribution was ok when unladen.

The Pacific Telephone motor pool in Pasadena California had one of these. The side doors of some had D O D G E in separate chrome letters. One in the fleet was D E D G O.
Needs "Free Candy" spray painted on the side ...

ReplyDeleteIf it has a slant six engine in it, it will still run for another four decades.
ReplyDeleteA100 Van Seats in Acid Dipped, Hemi Lightweights, 'cause 'Murica!
ReplyDeleteIs that a split windshield?
ReplyDeleteDoes it have an 8-track? It needs an 8-track.

ReplyDeleteThe pickup truck version of same that bluesun mentioned has always tripped my neat-o meter.

Hadn't thought of that in years.
Them and the Econoline vans... the original 'boxes'... :-)
ReplyDeleteThat van has seen some things. Things, man. Just . . . things.
ReplyDeleteThat van is clearly aghast.
I like the Marque- at least if you hit someone you can say they were warned.

Had a frat brother who had one like that to carry his rock band equipment and a keg of beer on tap. He had an orange VW thing for his everyday ride.
ReplyDeleteRich was the Steve McQueen of our group, terminally cool.

That van would not look out of place parked just down the street from a playground. But they're still cool vans.
ReplyDeleteIs there a tear-stained mattress in the back?

Looks to me like it needs to be emblazoned with "Mystery Machine" on the side.

It's frowning at me! MAKE IT STOP FROWNING AT ME!
ReplyDeleteThat van looks like it just sat down on a train seat before realising it's completely soaked in someone else's urine.
