I'll bet there are actually at least two stages: an ordinary catnap, like we see here, and the cat's "sleep of the dead" version.
I know about the second one because of a particular cat of my ex-SO's which crossed over about a decade ago. She absolutely worshiped me and the boots I walked in in, which drove my ex-SO nuts.
Anyway the first few times i noticed she did the sleep-of-the-dead in my lap sent me into a mini-panic until she woke up. I've never held a more trusting cat since.
Her attention detector went off.
