State Fair time again! Spent the day with Bobbi wandering the fairgrounds, and that means the usual pictures of critters and tractors and people and stuff. Since this 1950 Dodge Power Wagon has been a perennial fan favorite, I figured I'd start off with a picture of it.
.
Sweet!
ReplyDeleteOh... I learned to drive in one of those (1953 model though)... And I only knocked ONE fender off! :-)
ReplyDeleteOld NFO,
ReplyDelete"Oh... I learned to drive in one of those..."
I am somehow completely unsurprised. It's a very OldNFO sort of vehicle. :)
Pop bought a '65 PowerWagon surolus from the USAF. It is lovingly sitting on blocks in the back yard.
ReplyDeleteThey're very trucklike. When someone says "Rides like a truck" they're talking about a Power Wagon.
ReplyDeleteI once was on Chapin Beach on Cape Cod when a 4x4 truck got stuck in the intertidal zone on a sandbar when the tide turned. Something in the drive train broke when they attempted to get unstuck. A 4x4 Power Wagon tow truck of similar vintage that looked like it has a lift kit installed came out to tow the vehicle. We expected the tow truck to drive further down the beach to get to where the sandbar joined the land. Instead, the tow truck drove the shortest path straight through the shallow salt water, hooked up, and drove back the same way with the disabled vehicle in tow. I later learned that the tow truck operator was the only one in the area that would respond to this type of call. The customers paid very well for the service, but did not lose their trucks to the rising tides.
ReplyDeleteBest truck you could ever get. They will go anywhere and pull a stump out by the roots.

ReplyDeleteI used to have a 1952 Dodge M-37. Gee, I sure do miss that truck. But that Power Wagon...Rowr!
ReplyDeleteThere's not enough automotive intelligence or gumption in the US to do it, and it would probably be a small, Prius-sized market, but I'd wager that a modern, non-FU'd version of the Power Wagon would sell.
ReplyDeletePut a good, solid diesel in it, extend the cab to put some storage behind the seat, keep the boxy contours, everything mechanical - no electronics at all, including gauges - paint all of 'em red, and start taking orders.

ReplyDeleteWhere do I sign up?
Alien:
ReplyDeletegood luck. I don't think you are allowed to sell a new diesel without electronic fuel injection now. Part of the smog control system. And forget CA. The .gov minions really don't like diesels, here in the US.
I'm not entirely clear on this, but I've read that we actually export all our diesel fuel, and what is used here is imported. EPA doesn't like the components, might be the sulfur? Might explain why it's so expensive.
Tam, I was 12... LOL
