Teaser.

Huh. UHaul rentals are a lot cheaper than I thought.

More later...

  1. Rampant speculation time.

You won the lottery and you're going to pick up the entirety of that auction you linked?

  3. Oh crap!, why does it sound like the view from the porch might be changing soon???, packing up AR mags, price checking U-hauls, I'm scared.

  4. DO NOT BUY FERTILIZER AT THIS TIME.

    That is all :)

  5. To my knowledge, short of unicorns that can dispense cold beer from their fairy steeple, there is no greater bit of wishful thinking than the 45 mph speed limit stickers on U-Haul trailers.

  6. from Dr Weevil's bro Steevil:

I suspect Tam's renting a truck. Doubt that the Z3 has a towing rating.

But, some of those trucks will barely do 45.

  7. Are you moving to a freer place? Maybe a place where you can buy beer and liquor in the grocery store and only a couple of communist enclaves have anti-smoking ordinances, and recognizes any states or foreign countries carry permits?

  8. "DO NOT BUY FERTILIZER AT THIS TIME."

    I LOL'ed.

I've driven two U-Haul trucks and two Penske trucks, both 16 feet or so. The U-Haul trucks were always run down and hard to get going on the freeway, but the Penske trucks were always a joy to drive.

Driving a truck 16 feet isn't much of a test though. A few miles mebbe...

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

  10. Well, I know. Not telling.

But we better do the lunch thing prior, young missy!

I'm working off the utterly baseless assumption that she's off to Alaska or perhaps Texas, so, yeah, absolutely. I was just bringing up something I invariably think when I see the word "U-Haul". Followed shortly by "U-Walk" then "that sounds awful big to be a possum"...

  12. If you get a U-haul, get the tires and brakes checked out by a pro! When my parents retired they got one and lost the brakes and blew a tire while crossing the rockies!

  13. You're not moving nort' to rent Roberta's attic are you?!

  14. Tam's giving up the morning donuts at the Oil Empire Outpost, and moving to Terlingua TX to shoot blue quail.

    Y'all heard it here first.

  15. She's moving to one of my rental units. It's a bargain for her because I accept Snark as a form of rent payment

  16. If she is coming to Texas, why then "Welcome!, spread out, take a load off a set a spell."

  17. don't think u-haul's famous breakdowns will be a problem for tam...not to make light of the tragic storm front that blew through tennessee last evening, but since she's still posting, i assume she is okay...but her doublewide prob'ly blew off it's blocks and she plans to live for a while in that u-haul...it's nicer anyway! but she'll have to nail on a porch or change the blog name! jtc

    Thunderbolt, is snark readily fungible?

  19. Seriously, avoid U-Haul. They suck, and are dangerous.

The U-Haul trucks and trailers that aren't old are unmaintained.

The last time I rented a U-Haul trailer for a cross town move, I checked the manufacturing date on the trailer plate. 1969. Seriously.

  20. I've rented from them several times, and I've never had a problem with U-Haul. I did once get a truck that was governed to 55mph. That sucked.

The last time I moved they included a dolly in the truck that was padlocked in place. To "rent it" you had to pay them money to get the key to the pad lock. I was irritated that they included it in the truck when I didn't want it (I own two) and that it was in the way, so out came the wife's pick kit...

  22. If you have accepted some offer from some......guy....I STRONGLY suggest you open the bidding before making your final decision!

He could be a broke MASHER! He could be a slacker. He could have crooked toes and no room in the safe. The weather might be bad. The landscaping might flow uphill. There could be roaches!

Plus, I gotta tell you, on the open market, you would generate much buzz.

(Boy am I glad this is anonymous, but I do have my checkbook open!)

  23. But can Tam enjoy life north of the Smith & Wesson Line? {g}

    (I am guessing "New Hampster")

  26. I got it! You're packing up and heading this way to come work at the shop with me. And you're bringing all your fun toys as well.

Okay, probably not in reality. I'm sure whatever you've got going is a good thing though. I certainly wish you the best of course.

Oh, and I must say I've had some really good experience with those U Haul trucks. Last company I worked for bought a few and stuck our logo on the side and parked one by each location for use as a billboard for our advertising. Imagine, if you will, the brave souls among us who drove them from the sales lot to their final resting places. Whoa yikes! 2 of 4 broke down during those few miles. But 3 out of 4 got where they were going under their own power. 3 out of 4 ain't bad.

In... Maryland. Where they greet you at the border with bill boards threatening you with a felony indictment for possession of a single unlicensed handgun. Righhhhht.

Hm. That's a possibility. If that were under DesertRat's sig, I'd buy it. [Say hi to my pet quail, AE].

  29. U-Drive-It places vary widely and on a store-by-store basis, so any of you who have rented from Knoxwegian locations might wanna speak up.

For one-way moves, ubiquity of franchisees is a consideration -- if Tam's just goin' across town, the options are wider.

Last move I made, I rented from two different U-Hauls; one rented me a shiny nice pickup truck, the other a couple of okay vans and a scary box truck. But I was moving a distance just barely too far to simply load stuff onto a little red wagon an' push.

  30. Yes Snark is fungible Roberta. Don't buy gold, BUY SNARK!

  31. Not only is it fungible, it's delicious sauted with garlic and butter!

  33. She's got so many cool S&W's, that she needs a trailer to go to the range!

  34. How does Uhaul Compare to the PODS?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well, Owen, U-Haul doesn't kill you off and replace you with an exact replica the way PODS do, for one thing.

Also the PODS don't appear to have wheels or an engine. The up side is, you don't have to drive them.

I wish I'd've thought of that when I moved!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Roberta,

Is your stuff still sitting in the box in your driveway at the old place?

I think your supposed to tell the POD people where you are going.

  37. H'mm, you've run rings 'round me logically.

  38. Ah, U-Haul...

Retired fella of my acquaintance gave me his old sailboat (International Fireball 16', for those in the know) and trailer a few years ago, to get it out of his garage.

The trailer was hors de combat, so I rented a U-Haul to move it. I ended up with a 28-footer with a manual tranny. I'd have needed a CDL to drive it for a living, but U-Haul will rent you one. Actually, it wasn't half bad to drive, for being a barge.

    ReplyDelete
  39. U-Haul. Ahh, the joys of being broke.

There was the one that came with a rag for a gas cap. There was the car trailer where the fender fell off on I-95 and the box truck that blew a head gasket halfway between Austin and Houston.

Try to get one from the big depot if you can. They're more likely to be maintained. Otherwise, it's a crap shoot. They aren't lying about the adventure part.

  40. Olds,
I think I rented the very same truck a week and a half ago. Big diesel barge with 5 on the floor, and I needed every one of them. Not exactly a truck for the novice driver, which might explain the exterior condition.

OTOH, I have had U-hauls work cross country more often than good ole Budget rent a truck. Two days stuck in West Memphis with a trashed wheel hub on the trailer carrying my jeep was not fun. I never imagined a place with like 6 christian bookstores, but no other bookstores. I had to resort to Kroger for something to read!

Sadly, that was my second service call to Budget that trip.
