The 4-H teaching guide I have teaches that the rifle shoud rest upon either bone or stretched muscles/tendons- flexed muscles tire and produce shaking. I saw a lot of kids in the same stance pictured in that link....
Cool picture, lots of personality in those faces. I don't see many cheating, violent, or even uppity husbands in their futures. Except for #2- she looks like she'll be using her skills on a succession of losers.
I believe the current DC high school girl's shooting activities are somewhat more individually based. And instead of Winchester single shot muskets, they use Lorcin and Raven products.

Nit a horrible offhand stance, if you don't have a palmrest, I suppose. Us hillbillies just do it like this:

Those are Savage Model 1919 rifles, competitor to the ultimately triumphant and magnificent Winchester Model 52.
