Eclectic.

The transfer of the CD library to iTunes continues. Now burning:

  • Drivin N Cryin, Fly Me Courageous
  • Duran Duran, Decade
  • Frontline Assembly, Gashed Senses & Crossfire
  • L7, Bricks Are Heavy

We've totally outgrown the iMac's internal HDD, and so now we're thanking miscellaneous deities who hold the consumer electronics portfolio that Fry's had that acomdata 150Gb FireWire drive on sale stupid cheap last month. (I think it was like $50 or $60. I remember when 100Mb was fantastic, now you can get 150Gb practically as the prize in a Cracker Jack box...)

I've got a jump drive that holds twelve times that much, and the one and two gig versions are about free. I'll probably see equipment dealers and seed dealers handing them out - they're cheaper than hats!

  2. I bought a 1 Terabyte Western Digital MyBook USB drive for $250 when it was on sale at the beginning of the year.

  3. I saw the big display video sign at Micro Center on the way home the other night- 450gb ATA for $59.

I remember talking with a buddy who owns an ISP shop years ago when I was building the server specs for my place; what I was putting together was more than he was handling 3000 dialup customers with. It was a Cyrix P200 with 128mb of memory and a 4.5gb SCSI running FreeBSD 2.6. He was jealous, so I let him borrow it for a month before I went live with it.

    Regards,
    Rabbit.

  5. Oh you kids. I remember {hey sonny, stop fooling with my oxygen tank} when the big step up from cassette tape was a 5 1/4" floppy disk drive at 35 tracks-single sided. Oh, and 32K of RAM was much sought after.

  7. ritchie,

"Oh, and 32K of RAM was much sought after."

    32K?!? Looxury!!!

Would that my first computer (a TI-99/4A) had thirty-two whole kilobytes of RAM!

My second computer, however, was a Coleco ADAM that I bought on sale at Lionel Playworld. It had a blistering 72Kb of memory and high-speed tape drives...

  8. How about a Sinclair ZX81 without enough memory to hold a program and write a block to an 40x25 grid?

Ah, the joys of a membrane keyboard, no storage, and the RF coupler to the B/W TV.

  9. 32k? Spoiled brats. My first computer had half that, and I had to solder another RAM chip onto the motherboard to get lowercase characters!
