I've been reading Jeff Cooper's Gargantuan Gunsite Gossip. Like reading Miss Florence King's collected old "Misanthrope's Corner" columns from National Review (Stet, Damnit!), it's a fascinating archaeological view of the not-too-distant past.
Courtesy of the good Colonel, I note that 'way back in '87, James Kilpatrick referred to one Sen. Biden as "The Lickspittle Lapdog of the Lunatic Left".
Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose...
I am not ENTIRELY a Cooperite, but I proudly call myself a Cooper Trooper. In a display of great bravado (and affection) I refer to John D. "Jeff" Cooper, Col., USMCR, as "Uncle Jeff."
ReplyDeleteI use the New Technique. I use a modified Weaver stance and believe in sighted fire, and have been heavily, heavily influenced by the idea of the Scout rifle.
There are places where I disagree with Uncle Jeff, or maybe just where I fall short of his magnificence. I don't disdain the 9mm, particularly with good expanding bullets, and my most (recently anyway) used .45 is a Glock 21/30.
In addition to his promulgation of firearms technique and doctrine, Uncle Jeff was a splendid writer and an adventurous spirit. Wonder what he'd think of this election?
Coop's a good read.
ReplyDeleteExpanding on Cooper's political characterizations, does anyone else remember his tag line for the right Rev. Jesse Jackson?
ReplyDelete"The tan fuhrer."
