As it turns out...

...I wasn't stymied by the weather but by an even more potent force.

Cold and rainy scares me not. Since you can't guarantee that your "for real" moment, should it come, will come in the middle of a grassy lawn on a sunny, 78-degree day, it behooves you to get out and shoot when Mother Nature isn't cooperating. If the wind is trying to blow your hat off or the cold rain is dribbling down your collar or your fingers are so cold you can hardly feel them, you know it's good training weather.

So it wasn't the weather that kept me from the range yesterday, it was an even more irresistible force: the unstoppable force of bureaucracy. The local Five-Oh had the place closed off for their own purposes.

  1. I hate it when they do that.

On the other hand, they probably need the practice.

  2. Who do they think they are? The police or something?
I don't suppose they told you "go away, don't play around here"

  3. Well, they can't have civilians on the range out shooting them, now can they?

  4. Um, aren't police civilians?

(Yes, APCs, EBRs, bulletproof vests, restricted ammunition to the contrary.)

I will say it's a weird thing to show up at an indoor range, open the door to the sales area, and realize you're surrounded by twenty cops who have all just turned to look at you.

  5. Agree, they probably did NOT want to be outshot by a lowly "civilian"

  6. There is a dedicated part of the range at my club for the cops. If they are not there and you go to shoot there its rather annoying because they live up to the name pigs. They totally trash it and never pick up brass. Of course they are above the law...

My old gun club back in MI kicked them out after a year of them trashing the place.

  7. Wolfwood, LEOs don't have EBRs; in LE hands, an EBR miraculously becomes a Patrol Rifle.

  8. Jeff,
I just love it when they don't pick up their brass. I'd love it even more if they shot 10mm instead of .40s&w. Some of the more enlightened ones do shoot .45 so that's cool

  9. Well they are the only one's professional enough to. . .

  10. Gee, Tamara, Have you considered joining a Conservation Club? Marion County Fish and Game isn't that far, is it?

  11. It is a shame if your local cops trashed your range, Jeff. Write their chief a letter. Seriously.

Sadly, Alan is correct-- they do need the practice. All too many cops have to be ordered to the range, and observed by a PD R.O. to guarentee that they show proficiency.

It sucks to miss out on a range day when the range is monopolized. I've completely been there. Do they have a schedule that you could consult? A number you could call?
