Snowpocalypse Now:

The neighbors across the street have buried their Civic but good in about a foot of eensy beensy snowflings that mother nature has dumped on the ground out front.

I believe I'll walk to the store today...

(The annoying part of the whole thing is that late yesterday afternoon, with about four inches already on the ground, I noticed the snow had stopped, thought "That's the worst of it, then...", and shoveled the walks.)

  1. Yup, typical rookie mistake! I'll get to it this afternoon when I get home, maybe!

  2. The number of cars I've pulled out of the snow this winter is now up to five. So far, nobody is so "green" as to complain about my driving a "gas guzzler" when my Explorer pulls their Prius out of the ditch.

    I love four wheel drive.

  3. This is why I love my Subaru. 9 inches of ground clearance and full-time all wheel drive with traction control is fucking sweet.

  4. Pfft. Made it into work today without even thinking about 4WD.

350 rear-wheel horsepower, no weight in the bed, still made it just fine over hilly terrain.

Now if only the stupid mofos would get the hell out of my way...

  5. Au Contraire, to leaving it pile up, for one big snow-lust shoveling.

Nuh-unh. Easier to throwe off three or four inches at a time, even with light and fluffy snow. If it's a wet, heavy fall then incremental shoveling is almost mandatory, unless y'r a youngster that loves the aerobic cold air workout.

How'emsoivver; each to his own method, as long as it ends somewhere before June.

J t R, procrastinating about putting on the snowboots and grabbing the shovel. OTOH, the Chessie Boy brown dog thinks this is just heavenly playtime.

PS: Y'know, this 'verify' bit is sometimes like a Ouija board invocation -- in this case -- el el ofi. Would that it would make the sidewalk snow vanish, while it's at it.

  6. Two hours south of you, Tam, and I think they've nearly shut down the city with the combination of snow, ice and incompetence we've got going here.

  7. And you laughed at me for buying that flamethrower!

    Now who's "being silly"?

  8. 12.4 lovely inches of global warming on the driveway this morning.

Amazingly enough, my little cheapie single-stage snowblower did the job on it. Didn't have to call AlGore for assistance.

But it would be nice if the city would run a plow down the street.

  9. "I believe I'll walk to the store today..."

Hmm. I could be a nice person and tell you in detail how well the four wheel system in my new Jeep works in snow... :)

  10. Get that mountain bike out and go for a ride. Nothing better than a snow ride. Though, we don't normally have to deal with 12" around here.

I got a 12 mile ride in our DC region snow last night (yup, night ride in the snow, yum). However, it was sleeting most of the time. Everything that wasn't generating heat was covered in ice by the end.

  13. Flamethrower. It's the universal answer.

"Caleb, I want you to shovel the driveway." Solution: flamethrower.

"Caleb, I want you to cut the lawn." Solution: flamethrower.

"Caleb, I want you to go to my mother's." So, you see how this works. :-)

  14. If you take Chris' advice on a snow ride make up some winter tires by running short sheet metal screws into the knobs (or buy the ready made studded tires) I worry that we'll hear that you broke a hip when the bike squirted-out sideways from under you (it's probably the second most common major injury for bicyclists after collarbones)

  15. Anon 10:08, you have to get a feel for the stuff. Today's was powdery; a 4WD Deere could back-blade two feet of it. Other days, you're spot on: wet snow glaciates under pressure, and if it's driven on just once, it's there until Spring.

That's why Smilla and I have 28 words for snow...
