The last gun store at which I found 9mm FMJ ammunition in stock (Premier Arms) had three boxes of S&B left on the shelf. I very deliberately and self-consciously only bought two of them, despite being completely out of 9mm ball at home, because bogarting all the ammo is rapidly becoming the newest social
faux pas amongst the shooty set.
Egads! Socialism is spreading! :D
ReplyDeleteWally World had to put a 6 box limit on purchases because of those bozos. Granted, it gets bought out 10 minutes after it gets off the truck anyway, but at least one or two other people get a chance.
ReplyDeleteTam,
ReplyDeleteWell done. Good manners, they don't cost you anything, but they pay huge dividends!

ReplyDeleteNo, "socialism" would have been me buying all three boxes and then being forced to give one away, whether I wanted to or not.
Wow, and all this time I thought I was doing it because it's all I could afford... ;)
ReplyDeleteAll I want is a chance to buy just 6 boxes of ammo. The stores around here have been sold out of handgun ammo for going on two months now.
ReplyDeleteThat's (as far as I know) the one good thing about the lack of gun culture in the People's Republic of NJ; the stores still have ammo. Though I ought to buy more before the slavering hordes of PA swin the Delaware and loot it all :)
ReplyDeleteWhether buying up everything you see in the desired caliber is bad depends on how you define bogarting the ammo.
ReplyDeleteI got lucky the other day and saw 6 bricks of .22LR. I only wanted 2 or 3, but I went ahead and bought all 6. The next day at the range, I sold 4 of those $20 bricks to some friends at cost so they wouldn't have to pay the $35/brick price the range was asking at the time.
Screw that! buy it all!
ReplyDeletetimes like these make me glad i got a guy.

Though I ought to buy more before the slavering hordes of PA swin the Delaware and loot it all :)I've gotta be missing something here. I generally get sarcasm, and the "People's Republic" part made sense, but... What "lack of gun control"? I thought maybe I was confused because I'm a Southerner, so I asked my husband (a NJ native). He only has one question... What "lack of gun control"?
ReplyDeleteIn our defense, it's lunchtime but we haven't eaten yet. Our brains could be fuzzy.
"lack of gun culture" :)
ReplyDeleteI asked the clerk at Wally world if they intended to lower their current purchase limit of 12 boxes. She laughed and said "I'd just love to have 12 boxes of something to sell you."
ReplyDeleteShe did say that they didn't intend to lower the limit. They figure everything is flying out the door so fast that they don't care if they sell 12 boxes to me, or 2 each to the 6 guys in line behind me.

Thank you! It makes sense now. I blame the gov't. All that gun control just makes me see it everywhere now.
I went gun shopping yesterday, and there's ammo everywhere here.
ReplyDeleteAnd to the hoarders: Unless you want to fight the revolution/invasion/zombie apocalypse by yourself, let other people have a chance to buy some frakking ammo, you half-wit.
Ran off about 1,600 225 gr. Lyman 452372 in nice hard linotype (G.I. .45acp roundnose analog), plus about 500 173 gr. .30 cals last Saturday.
ReplyDeleteThe guy who runs the surplus store in Groton belongs to a bunch of guys who have more money than sense, and spend a weekend a month firing their Thompsons, going through umpteen donkey's zillions of rounds.
I bought about twenty paint cans of once fired brass from him, about 18,000 of the little darlings, for less than a penny apiece.
Really neat cans too. The insides are a nice coat of navy gray, so I guess they're military surplus. Uncle may not know they're surplus, but it's a Navy town, and has been for a century or so. Neat shop, just down the street from the main entrance to General Dynamics/Electric Boat. Stop by if/when you're local.
Now to assemble the bullets and the cases. The sizing is the only part that resembles work. A little more than a pound and a half of Unique and I'm set for the year's pistol ammo.
The camp stove, mellow neighbors, and a lovely day equal lots of ammo goodness. Have fun standing in line folks, I already have a headstart on my obligatory Celtic sunburn.
Bogarting?
ReplyDeleteCare to expand on that? It's new to me.

ReplyDeleteAh, point taken on the socialism. On one of your links I think this says it best:
ReplyDeleteIf someone buys it before I can, it's hoarding.
If I buy it first, it's just stockpiling. It's the view point I take since I've been a minute late to some locations and missed out on bulk boxes of 22LR. I'd do the same thing. I like to think of myself as a "free marketer" so I have to take the viewpoint "limited resources, supply and demand", etc.
If it had been the last 3 pounds of hamburger, or the last 3 ink pens, would you have done the same? Why is ammo special?
ReplyDeleteSorry that I don't get it, but if it's out there for sale, and the seller has placed no limits on quantities, what's the difference if you buy it all, or you leave a box and the next guy buys it all? At the end of the day, it's still all gone.
"If it had been the last 3 pounds of hamburger, or the last 3 ink pens, would you have done the same?"
ReplyDeleteIt depends. Do I have fellow hamburger or ink pen lovers desperate for a fix? If so, I might buy two and make a few phone calls as I left.
Remember: I did this voluntarily, because it made me happy, which is the opposite of Governmentally Enforced Altruism.
Telling me I should have bought all three is as wrong as telling me I should have bought none. I bought exactly as many as I wanted to buy.
I bought exactly as many as I wanted to buy.False Consciousness!!! ;-)
ReplyDeleteAll the Walmarts in my area are sold out of most handgun stuff, and the more common rifle calibers. Lots of shots shells, though.
ReplyDeleteI picking up my Glock 17 on Saturday, so I went to the local store yesterday and got two boxes of Blazer Brass for $17 each. I'll probably breeze through most of that on Monday when I go to the range.
On father's day a ammo wholesaler that is not too far away is having a once a year open to the public sale at their warehouse. Normally they only sell at shows. A couple weeks ago at the Reno Big Gun show a friend got a case of 1000 rounds of Wolf ammo for $160. Already got the cash set aside. I might pick up another 500 rounds of 5.56 while I am there.
Setting up the Dillon presses this weekend to crank out several hundred rounds more. Cost? About $3.50 per box of 50 rounds 9mm Luger.
ReplyDeleteRetail ammo - what's that?
"Retail ammo - what's that?"
ReplyDeleteIt's the stuff that used to be on the shelf next to the empty spot where they used to sell primers.
:p
