Someone has a lucky day...
There are several novels that I try to buy every time I find a copy for sale cheaply, just so I have enough on hand to pass out to friends for subtle proselytization purposes: Starship Troopers and The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress, stuff like that.
J. Neil Schulman's Alongside Night would be one of those books of which I keep several copies in stock, but for how scarce it is. Well, my roommate happened to stumble across a copy in the used book store yesterday, and not just any copy, either.

A very good find - ten to one, HPB had no idea what they were looking at. Anarchocapitalist SF isn't exactly something they would bother to examine further. Having worked there for a few years (many years ago), that's not really in the staff's wheelhouse, so to speak. Recent visits have done nothing to change my evaluation.
ReplyDelete(When I worked there, the good SF and military history never made it out to the sales floor. 1942 and '43 editions of Jane's Fighting Ships, stuff like that...)

ReplyDeleteYeah, fine, but that still doesn't help you in having extra copies on hand for proselytizing. Unless you're gonna, uh, "lend" it to me, because I haven't read it yet.
ReplyDeleteStarship Troopers is badass! I loved that book, and thought at the time I read it (circa 1989) what a great movie it would make. Man, did I blow it on that one!

Atlharp: A movie of Starship Troopers would be great. Too bad they made some other movie and slapped the title on it instead.

ReplyDeletethe biggest disappointment with Starship Troopers (I mean after the script and acting) was the absence of the Gorilla suits. I mean c'mon! What's the point of making the movie without the Gorilla Suits?

Ah jeez, Starship Troopers... I can actually enjoy the movie, if I pretend that it is really based on some comic book or anime, and by sheer coincidence has the same title and some character names in common with a Heinlein novel.
ReplyDeleteTo me, the most annoying aspect of the movie is making Juan Rico into a white bread middle class American. Heinlein was being very subversive for his time in having the protaganist be Filipino. He was also very sublte about it, leaving clues but not realy giving it away until near the end.
GREAT find. I'm off today. Hit our favorite little local gun store this morning, and then off to the bookstore of the large cat after grocery shopping.
