Pretend I'm a hypothetical college student. I am going to write a paper on self-defense, and my thesis is that "Most Gun Owners Consider .22 To Be Totally Ineffective For Self-Defense."
To gather support for my theory, I poll gun owners with the question "Which would you prefer for self-defense: A .22 or a big stick?"
26% respond "A .22", 44% respond "A big stick", 12% respond "A .44 Magnum Loaded With 240gr Federal HydraShoks", 10% respond "Screw you and your push polls, you Obama-votin' closet commie!", and 8% respond " Ron Paul in '12!" (This is the internet, after all...)
I change the title of my paper to "Gun Owners: Too Antisocial To Win?" and get an A+. ;)
Question. Would a High Speed Hollow Point from my little Colt Auto do enough damage inside the brainpan of a zombie to immobilize it?
ReplyDeleteIf so, then I might have the ideal greeting tool for evenings when the dead come calling (crawling?).
While I prefer a caliber larger than .22, as do most sane people, it is definitely better than nothing. As you have often eloquently put to those who deride small calibers, you have yet to find any volunteers to catch one.
ReplyDeleteYeah, well, it simplifies matters when the only answers available are the ones you want to hear... ;)
ReplyDeleteI just played along for the fun of it.
Widespread disdain for the .22 is a good thing. It keeps the prices of some neat old guns within reach.
ReplyDeleteA banjo!
ReplyDeleteI'd definitely pick up my 10/22. Once I'm out of ammo, I hold it by the barrel and use it as a big stick.
ReplyDeleteFirst rule of a gunfight: bring a [fill in the blank]. (Hint: it rhymes with "fun.")
ReplyDeleteIf a Mark lll will get me to the rifle, OK.
ReplyDeletebgeek, After witnessing a 10/22 used in just that way, let me just say, get a louisville slugger if you want a club. You can even use the LS later as a club. The 10/22, not so much, let alone as a rifle again.
ReplyDeleteI used to spend some time in hospitals here in Oz - part-time job helping me through University.
ReplyDeleteOne patient that I became friendly with was having his knee rebuilt after using his 10/22 as a club.
He fired 9 rounds at a rabbit and missed, so he ran after it and clubbed it with a rifle that he THOUGHT was empty - Boom! Ouch! Oh sh*t!
That little .22 at about 6 inches destroyed his knee.
Favorite gun for poachers around these parts is the .22. Some go for the magnum, but the bulk are Marlin and ruger autos.
ReplyDeleteMy thinking is that if there is a real threat, I want a 20 guage pump loaded with 6 shot. Pump to warn them and the 6 shot makes a hole about 1 foot around out to 30 yards.
"Pump to warn them "
ReplyDeleteSorry. The only warning you get around here is the loud boom and the bright flash.
"Sorry. The only warning you get around here is the loud boom and the bright flash."
ReplyDeleteDoes that mean it's unsportsman like to use a suppressor for home defense?
I am NOT anti-social, I just don't like people!
ReplyDelete"Does that mean it's unsportsman like to use a suppressor for home defense?"
ReplyDeleteNot at all...
If there is no loud boom or bright flash, the sudden impact will have to be enough warning.
Obviously the correct answer is a Wookiee Bowcaster
ReplyDeleteDuhh!
And remember kids, protect your six with thems rear deflector shields!
Yeah, I used to carry a Ruger Mk 2. I had a buddy who spewed all that "piss-ant .22 is just gonna piss me off" bullshit. I told him, "One might. I'm not stopping with one, though, and I'm going for your eyes if I can. After nine shots, I'm reloading and assessing the need for further ventilation."
