Ben at Kick Him, Honey linked to a fascinating piece about a photographer who has done an art book entitled Alter Ego: Avatars and their Creators, full of photographs of real people and their online gaming avatars, complete with short interviews with each subject about how they chose that avatar.
That'd make an interesting read.
If you buy the deluxe hardcover, all the neck beards are enhanced with flocked paper cut-outs.

Nothing wrong with a little fantasy, I guess, but if more folks would concentrate on controlling their first life, they might not need to create a second one. Excepting that little Stephen Hawking of course.
