Once they got there, they all walked out on the sand and stood in a big line, joined hands and thought happy thoughts.
They didn't actually do anything except apologize to Mother Gaia, perhaps in faux dolphin-speak.
As children and adults formed a 150-yard chain along the Pacific coastline their message was clear.
"We know that oil is not the answer," said Erkeneff. "The poor fishermen didn't ask for this. The ocean didn't ask for it. Now is the time. If not now, then when?"
Listen, hippie, those poor fishermen don't exactly row their boats out to sea, if you catch my meaning.
In sum total, what you people did was drive someplace where there wasn't a problem, complain about something you don't fully understand, get in the way of people who may actually be performing a function, and then do nothing, en masse, except hope that someone else notices your little snit and makes it all better.
My god, if there's a more perfect metaphor for the modern progressive movement, I've never seen it.
Pffft, once again you have failed to account for the lower readings on their White Guilt meters.
ReplyDeleteIn doing this seemingly feckless gesture the individual hippie is able to lower his White Guilt reading by at least 10%. This allows them to more readily deposit the trust fund check at the bank.
Shootin' Buddy
"If not now, then when?"
ReplyDeleteWould the hippie cry if somebody told her she's quoting Ronald Reagan?
These hippies are right - we shouldn't do deep water offshore drilling. We should be drilling in shallow water and on nice solid dry land.
ReplyDeleteEh. At a yard a head, there's 150 of 'em at their little seance?
ReplyDeleteHell, that's less than the number of idiots with blocks of cheese or whatever on their heads watching the game down at the pub.
The real metaphor is the focus and publicity on ignorant miniscule shit like this in lieu of simple truth and factual information. But what's the meta-for?
AT
I'll bet at least some of them traveled via conveyances that were powered to some degree by coal.
ReplyDeleteEh, their actions display all the silliness inherent in the progressive movement, but none of the sinister, heavy handed state action that usually goes hand in fist with progressivism. I say, let people be silly on their own dime and their own time.
ReplyDeleteWere candles involved? It'll just piss Mother Gaia off if candles weren't involved. They need to get a white guy dressed as an indian to bang on a drum to cleanse the bad karma their faux pas just created.

ReplyDeleteAnd justify it all by calling it "Raising Awareness", and act like something was actually accomplished.
"And justify it all by calling it "Raising Awareness", and act like something was actually accomplished."
ReplyDeleteI'll have you know that "Take Back the Night" vigils are a great place to met kinky chicks.
Or meet, even.

Most candles are made from parrafin which is a byproduct of, you guessed it, petroleum. So, by using candles they are in fact relying on the oil industry. Bad environmentalists.
And some of the additives in candles are actually carcinogenic. Can we sue these yokels for damages because of the candles second hand smoke we might have to breathe in?
Wouldn't it have been great if someone had siphoned all the gas out of their cars?
ReplyDeleteHeh, they threw a similar (though smaller) tantrum in the Cleveland area over the weekend. For some reason I had on the local news (remind me not to do that) and they showed about a dozen morons standing at the edge of Lake Erie, holding hands and chanting lamentations. The news crew took the whole thing very seriously and at no point asked the obvious question: when you drove in from the suburbs to do this, did fill up with premium or regular? The next segment was at a bar doing a benefit to raise money for the animals -- people holding cocktails, mugging for the cameras, saying such a shame for those oil-drenched penguins or pelicans or whatever dead-birdage they got down there.

Except who's awareness are they raising? Everyone there already belives the same thing, and anyone else is pretty much ignoring them. So rather than raising awareness I'd say it's more preaching to the choir.
Or are they raising awreness about what a bunch of self aggrandizing and arrogant morons they are? Even there, that's something we alraedy knew, so Id say instead they are reinforcing the stereotype.
And I bet they left a big mess behind them that had to be cleaned up by others to boot. Did you ever notice how much pollution is created at these eearth day type events?
sounds to me like a hippie version of a confession: they've confessed their sins, got the absolution, now they can go sin some more.
ReplyDeleteMy god, if there's a more perfect metaphor for the modern progressive movement, I've never seen it.
ReplyDeleteIt does rank up near the top. Queers for Palestine though is a close runner up for the perfect metaphor of the progressives.
This is their version of going to confession and praying the rosary.
ReplyDeleteThese types of things are therapeutic for the participants involved - nothing more. A poster above had it right - its about GUILT - hence the "sackcloth and ashes" in public. I lived in a small city north of Seattle for a few years. Every Saturday, a small group of people would take up posts at a busy intersection with "No War" and "Peace" signs. Every. Damn. Saturday. My God - what kind of person enjoys such a pointless activity on a Saturday morning?
ReplyDeleteAnd they would sing, sing, sing!
ReplyDeleteWe are the dorks
We are the hippies
We are the ones who want a better world
Made just by wishing
We could get off our asses
And make a real impact
But then we’d have to shower off this goo
The metaphor was not quite perfect. They were not allowed to shake the passersby down for buckets of money.

ReplyDeleteIsn't that the job description for a community organizer?
"If not now, then when?"
ReplyDeleteooo! ooo! I know! pick me!
The answer is "later." What do I win?
Where's a tidal wave when you need one?
ReplyDeleteWonder how many of them had garments, shoes, belts, etc made of leather? Maybe they should pray to Mother Gaia for being willing accomplices to the slaughter of poor little moo-cows. Speaking of which, make mine medium-well.
ReplyDeleteSounds exactly like what Obama did about the spill except he wore a suit.
ReplyDelete@OA,
ReplyDeletePictures or it didn't happen.
;)
Sounds exactly like what Obama did about the spill except he wore a suit.
ReplyDeleteBy suit do you mean golf chothing?Because he was on the case a whole lot on those driving ranges. Maybe he's fixing the leak the way that OJ was looking for the kiilers while geting his 18 holes in over and over.
Fore!!!
We had the same war protesters every Saturday as ALP mentioned, here in Ventura. That is until Obama was elected. No more protests. Apparently their deep concern disappeared even though the war continues.
ReplyDeleteSilly Retardo! "If not now, then when?" is from a TRACY CHAPMAN song. Who is BLACK. And sings about MOTHER EARTH. So she's better than you AND Ronald Reagan.
ReplyDelete/self-righteous idiocy
I'll bet some City Deputy Director of Community Outreach or Church Assistant Minister of Hipness and Relevance was on the clock for the planning and execution of this stunt.
ReplyDeleteBeats plowing a field or painting a fence.
“If I am not for myself, then who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, then what am I? And if not now, when?” - Rabbi Hillel
ReplyDeleteDidn't know the hippies were Jewish, didja?
Nice try Lissa. Reagan said that in 1985 at his second inaugural address.
ReplyDeleteChapman's song was published in 1988. Who copied who??
Reagan went forward in his time machine and copied Tracy, 'cause he's a stupid GOPlagiarist!
ReplyDeleteDave Rauschkolb is a genius!
ReplyDeleteOr at least very, very lucky...
He patented "give me money if you are mad about an ocean oil spill" in 2009!
Activist: someone who adamantly insists that someone else do something.
ReplyDelete"...if there's a more perfect metaphor for the modern progressive movement, I've never seen it."
ReplyDeleteThat's not a metaphor. That's the full blown reality of the Progressive movement—pretend to be all concerned and compassionate (for anything but people) while demanding that coercion be applied in every situation. -- Lyle
"That's the full blown reality of the Progressive movement—pretend to be all concerned and compassionate (for anything but people) while demanding that coercion be applied in every situation."
ReplyDeleteYup, they go for bulk sacrifice.
"I don't have to change my lifestyle because I've got the government to change it for millions, and thus their sacrifice is mine and I've earned my special privileges."
This is why they're so enthralled with strongmen like Stalin, Castro, and Hugo. That much sacrifice just has to result in something good! If millions have to die in the Politburo's attempt at making the New Soviet Man, then at least they died for something noble.
Rather similar to the AQ concept of involuntary martyrs. Funny that.
These cretins are willing to do anything to save the environment except go to school and learn some actual science.
ReplyDeleteOf course, it isn't they who are actually doing anything. They want everyone else to do something, mostly in the form of giving up things that they themselves either don't want or are unwilling to give up anyway.
They want to "raise awareness" of themselves only. Hippies love to complain but when it comes to doing actual work they are no where to be found, that, of course, is what the government is for.
ReplyDeleteI have yet to meet a hippy, and I have meet a lot, that was not completely self absorbed. They only do what brings them attention.
A bunch of freak'in meat heads. To bad a tsunami didn't hit right then. Would have helped clean up the planet, of course their rot would have killed most marine life.
ReplyDeleteog, you will appreciate PJ O'Rourke's take on that.
ReplyDeleteWe are the world [solipsism], we are the children [average age forty].
We are the ones to make a brighter day [unproven], so let’s start giving [logical inference supplied without argument].
There’s a choice we’re making, so let’s start giving [true as far as it goes].
We’re saving our own lives [absurd].
It’s true we’ll make a better day [see line 2 above],
Just you and me [statistically unlikely].
That’s three palpable untruths, two dubious assertions, and nine uses of a first person pronoun, not a single reference to trouble and anybody in it and no facts. The verse contains, literally, neither rhyme nor reason. And these musical riots of philanthropy address themselves to the wrong problems.
So many idiots, so few bulldozers.
ReplyDeleteSeems to have done the same good as the statewide day of prayer Governor Jindal ordered on June 27th... big surprise.
ReplyDelete"Seems to have done the same good as the statewide day of prayer Governor Jindal ordered on June 27th... big surprise."
ReplyDeletePrayer, for most sects of which I'm aware at least, doesn't have near the carbon footprint of driving to the beach, and can be done at home without getting in the way of people who might actually be trying to do stuff at said beach.
Tam,
ReplyDeleteNice place you have here.
From the coupla idiot statist comments
you received, it seems that there is no reasoning with these people. They are void of facts, logic and historical knowledge, as well as situational awareness.
May The Lord help us, this is going to get very bloody. I will be there,
though.
(I'm too old fer this crap.)
Hippies?
ReplyDeleteRelease the hounds...
Of course, as a libertarian, I would insist they were privately owned hounds.
I wonder if little Bobby Kennedy will get flown in his private jet down to Grand Isle and have a limo bring him to the protest long enough to get his picture taken with a dirty pelican and then take him back to one of his 20K plus square foot houses so he can write about people using too much energy? Just curious.
