Do want...

One of the things I've been meaning to do for some time is get the gripframe on my Ruger 22/45 inlet to use standard 1911 grip panels. Both my Colt and my Springer have identical VZ Gatorbacks and I'd like to have the same grips on the deuce-deuce, but I'd kinda been holding back because nobody I knew had had it done yet and I'm not exactly what you'd call an "early adopter".

And now someone has. And I know his guns get used, too. I'll be watching for reports on suckitude or (hopefully) the lack thereof.

  1. I got summa those VZ grips on your review of same some time ago. They are very good. Me likee. I'm glad I listened to you.

Now what do I do with all these extraneous wooden and rubber grip panels I tried before the VZ?

  2. I keep my nice exotic wood ones in my box of spare 1911 bits. Never know when you may get invited someplace with fancy dress rules or need to build another 1911.

    The rubber ones I '86ed. Icky-poo. :)

  3. Might be cheaper to pick up a Ruger 22/45R, but not as cool

  4. Who does this?

    "Do want."

    Me too!

Jason, what is this "R" model you mentioned.... yahoo and bing are as baffled as I am...

  5. Ruger finally got around to doing what everyone was already doing to their pistols - factory 22/45 with replaceable grip panels

  6. If Jason's referring to what I think he's referring to, at SHOT this year Ruger evidently introduced a new model of the 22/45 that allows you to slap interchangeable grips on the gun.

So far, I've done some informal plinking with the modified pistol, and fired it at a local Steel Challenge and, if you can believe it, ICORE match.

It feels much, much better, and fills my hands quite comfortably. The grips do feel a bit wider than a regular 1911, though.

Locally, I know two other guys who've done the same thing to their 22/45s, one of whom is using his pistol to shoot Bullseye.

As for the dot scope, this is my first pistol without iron sights. It's going to take a little getting used to, but it's already noticeably faster than shooting irons, at least after I've found the dot.

  7. I noticed the 22/45 has "1911-style" grip panels, "style" being a synonym for "not."

  8. Oh, if Ruger went and made the bushings non-1911 standard then they deserve to get kicked around endlessly.

Modding the old style 22/45 grips to use 1911 bushings/grips wasn't all that hard, but if Ruger actually tried to go with proprietary grips that's a whole truckload of fail.

  9. Sorry - should have left a link to the 22/45 R page on the Ruger site. Lord, they better make the bushings standard!

  10. I think the bushings are standard, but you need to grind 1911 grips to fit, which is annoying.
