I skipped dinner last night and woke up plenty hungry. Bobbi fixed oatmeal, which took away the owie, empty, hurty feeling in my tummy, but I still "felt hungry" and a little light-headed. While I was out running errands, I picked up a French Dip sammich at Arby's, and the light-headedness went away. I must have been short of some key nutrient or another that is found in au jus but not in oats.
I still haven't tried one of those Double Down things from KFC, but that probably would have hit the spot really well, too. I was kinda craving one, and looking for a KFC, but the car turned into Arby's on autopilot. Perhaps it was a fat and grease deficiency.
Probably was fat. Oatmeal is very good for you, but you need fat for brain function. Arby's is a pretty efficient way to get it.
ReplyDeleteFat, salt, protein, sugar...even the bad stuff is good for us.
ReplyDeleteYou need to have a french dip at Phillipe's, the birth place of the french dip, just south of Chinatown in Los Angeles. Then again, if you do, Arby's will never satisfy you again.
ReplyDeleteI haven't had a Doubledown yet, but I have had a Doublicious. Basically a more practicle version of the same thing, meaning it has a bun, and one less piece of chicken. It was very good.

"Then again, if you do, Arby's will never satisfy you again."
ReplyDeleteI wasn't exactly going to Arby's for the cuisine.
Grease and fat are are just as important as carbs and vitamins...
ReplyDeleteFeel better...
I tried a Double Down, and I wasn't impressed. I like me some chicken and bacon and cheese, but the Double Down didn't do it for me. A better sammich is the Arby's Chicken Cordon Bleu. No bacon, but there's ham, so it's close.
ReplyDeleteThe Double Down is a thing of beauty.
ReplyDeleteNot to be like all serious and stuff, but perhaps iron?
ReplyDeleteSteak. It's what's for dinner.
I had the same craving for a Doubledown. I was disappointed. You expect old-school KFC flavor slathered with bacon and stuff.
ReplyDeleteThe chicken tastes like butt and the bacon - dare I say it - had the flavor involuntarily removed at some sort of evil place that makes bacon not taste like bacon anymore.
I was teh sadn3ss.

Probably the sugar. Bare oatmeal is carbs but not sugar if you don't put it on yourself.
ReplyDeleteYou have any history of diabetes in your family? Light-headed waking up isn't a symptom but it's an indicator for me that the glucose/sugar is getting too low for comfort and something needs to be done pronto.
Joe R.
Oats are pretty good for quick energy but with a glycemic index of 48 to 58 (or 78 for instant) they turn to sugar pretty fast and deplete you.
ReplyDeleteTry raw beef. It's loverly.
ReplyDeleteJoe R.,
ReplyDelete"Probably the sugar. Bare oatmeal is carbs but not sugar if you don't put it on yourself."
No, I put some raw sugar and a sprinkle of cinnamon on it.
Not that it matters, but Sherm is spot on. Phillipe's has been in the same location since 1492 for a good reason. Their french dip is very french dippy, in a good way. The hot mustard is tasty too.
ReplyDeleteTake planes, trains, and automobiles post haste to Phillipe's in Los Angeles.
Yours truly,
Phillipe
Tam,

Enjoy!!

People need more fat in their diets.
ReplyDeleteHang around old people for a while. Look at their diet. No fat. Now listen when they move. Hear that creaking? They're missing out on vital lubrication. Joints need grease.
And salt... Ever get a paper cut and stuff the maimed digit in your mouth? Tasted a little salty right? I'm sure you can follow the logic from here.
LOL
Interesting...what was the time difference from bowl of oatmeal to the sandwich? Some foods don't react quick enough to get rid of symptoms as others do. At the least, you got something in you that stopped the light-headed feeling. Beef is good for that I guess!
ReplyDeleteLast but not least, don't skip a meal again! :)
Joe R.
We are all, in our own fashion, connoisseurs of grease.
ReplyDeleteAh, the four basic food groups, salt, grease, starch, and burnt crunchy bits.
ReplyDeleteI like the double down, it's a great idea who's time has come. Still I'd rather go to Ann's Chicken Fry house on NW 39th in Ok City Oklahoma. I haven't got the gas money for a trip to the coast and Ann's makes a plate sized chicken fried steak with sides on a separate plate.
Chick-fil-A. Agree the light headedness is troubling...
ReplyDeleteTam,
ReplyDeleteYou might add 1 tablespoon (or a bit less) of raisins to the oatmeal, and a teaspoon of crushed walnuts for the Omega nutrients. (I put 1/2 c. original oats [not quick oats] in a bowl with 1 c. water, the raisins or dried cranberry bits, the walnut, and nuke on 70% for two minutes, YMMV).
A cup of hot green tea, or glass of warm to hot water, can comfort the tummy as well.
Luck!
I cannot resist the urge to comment on food, so..
ReplyDeleteArby's sure killed the Ruben sandwich. They took all the flavor out of the rye, all the sour out of the kraut, and forgot to even give me some cheese.
Oh, and you can raise the glycemic index of oatmeal by using steel cut oats, but I still need to eat an egg over-easy with mine and throw a slab of butter in the oats+sugar+milk powder+raisins.
I recommend Irish coffee. Fat, caffeine, sugar and alcohol. All the really important food groups.
ReplyDeleteFWIW, keep a can of almonds in the car. If you feel lightheaded, eat a handful on your way to Irish Coffee.
Double down: it's ok. The thing is that it's KFC, so the chicken, when good, is VERY good. But there's little but chicken, so if it's goofed a little you'll pick it up. You KFC may vary.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I've had a couple over the last year or so and they're alright. The only beef (heh) I have with them is the bacon usually isn't crispy (figures a restaurant specializing in pressure cooking food can't really fry fresh bacon) and they tend to be a little salty.
I thought the double down would be good, but it made me sick, and it wasn't very good at all.
ReplyDeleteMeat: There is no substitute.
ReplyDeleteArby's pecan-chicken-salad sandwich is surprisingly good and can make you think you're eating something healthy. Mayo gives you energy.
