Shooting Buddy's right, but it's hard to be stoic when you're selfish, as most of us (me especially!) actually are.
The man polished chestnuts until they gleamed, and delivered them fairly and with style. He was a Canadian-born American who didn't spend his days telling us how much better it was in his old home.
For over 60 years, he entertained, and I find no evidence that he ever tried to use his stage as a pulpit to try to insert his political views into our heads. In fact, I haven't a clue what his views were.
Frank: It’s the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girl dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day. Jane: Goodyear? Frank: No, the worst
Never forget it was Leslie Neilson who played Francis Marion, The Swamp Fox in the Disney series of the early 60s. Walt disney loved guns and patriots, his company is an abomination to his memory.
His brother, a long time Minister of Parliament for somewhere WAAAY up north eventualy rose to Deputy Prime Minister.
The press hated him, "old zipper lips" for his , erm, discretion and lack of comment about just about everything, except telling the press to go to heck.
Nice man, funny guy, and some gret quotes. "Doing nothing is very hard to do...you never know when you're finished", "You're excited? You should feel my nipples", and of course, as Jay G has pointed out, nobody will be calling him Shirley any more.
For reference, he was the son of a Mountie, and grew up transferring from one lonely post to another, all over western Canada. The daydreaming probably helped his acting ability develop.
A good guy, who gave more than your money's worth in entertainment.

Is it me, or did it seem like he didn't age one bit from Airplane! right up until yesterday? I didn't even realize he was in his eighties.
