You stay classy, East Coasters!

So the college basketball tourney thingy is over. Apparently the Team of Closest Proximity was defeated by a Team of Distant Location. But what strikes me as interesting are the reactions of fans out in far-off East Coastia:

Butler beat VCU in the the semifinals, and Virginia Commonwealth University students rioted in the streets and set stuff on fire.

Butler was beaten by the U. Conn in the finals, and University of Connecticut students set stuff on fire and turned over cars.

What is in the water out there?

I'm, like, ten blocks from the Butler campus, and I can't hear any sirens or smell any smoke. As a matter of fact, it's all pretty quiet out here in arugula-deprived Bitterclingerville; it was a school night, after all.

  1. You don't suppose it's all that bottled water they drink, do you? I drink that stuff sometimes!

Damn. I'm gonna have to start carrying my thermos again.

  2. I dunno. A few years ago Mankato (which I think is part of the University of Minnesota, but I can't remember) got beat by the hometown crowd (NDSU) in Football. It wasn't even a surprise since Mankato's program was at best, semi-exisitant. Mankato students rioted.

So it can happen out here in the Mid-West. Why though, is beyond me.

  3. For some reason, the idea of a riot of Minnesotans just kicks my gigglebox right the hell over...

  4. Those of who live in or near Bitterclingerville apparently are culturally deprived.

Do those who fancy themselves superior to me have the slightest notion of how much I despise them?

  5. Minnesota is full of Scandiwegians and norhoovians who have a strong Viking heritage, and often break into a fight when broccoli is served. Indiana, on the other hand, is predominantly populated by german, polish, and Irish settlers (As opposed to Irish Setters) So called because they got to Indiana, looked around, and said "Ja, we settle for this!"

WV: Glico. You can save hundreds of dollars in 15 minutes by switching to Glico. And only use one hand!

  6. I loved the TeeWee interviews I saw with Butler kids yesterday -- they all went something like, "I'm going to do my homework and then watch the game."

Something tells me some of the UConn kids were performing transparency experiments at the local bars, instead.

  7. Point of interest: Until I saw the last few seconds of the game by mistake last night, I hadn't read about the sporting contest, only heard news reports. I was really confused why "Yukon" was in a A.S. collegiate championship.

The team mascot didn't help clear that up, either. Sneaky Yukongese!

  8. another sorry episode in the sordid conspiratorial crusade to write http://alumni.media.mit.edu/~cahn/humor/math-riots.html out of history

  9. Just to the South of you, the rather large State University used to win National titles somewhat regularly. I even participated in one of the celebrations and all I saw was a bunch of happy, drunk college kids and a few happy drunk high-school kids (at least me anyway).

The vibe was more euphoria than "lets tear stuff up!". I guess we bitter-clingers (is that were Klingon came from?) are just not so violent. Maybe it's because we all have guns, or maybe it's because we aren't douche-bags.

  10. There was only 6 arrests in Richmond for disorderly conduct according to the drive in news this morning; that video was seriously week sauce. Must be a slow news day.

  11. I should mention that UCONN, a very working class place for kids who can't get into a real school, has open enrollment for freshman year (they lose half of the freshman class, who go on to well tattooed careers with 7-11).

The school has a reputation for being one of the top party schools, complete with the requisite cars overturned and burned several times a year, primarily due to the "non-returning freshmen", who realize it's back to a shabby apartment and a 9 year old Toyota in Manchester come May.

  12. UConn and VCU are Division 1A Rioting Schools. They get 15 scholarship to award for their programs and do nation wide recruitment.

  13. It's not the water, it's the Half-Caf light on the Soy Foam Swill they drink up there. Bitterclingers, however drink Coffee with only 2 optional additives, Cream and/or Sugar, as GOD intended it. "You'll pry my Maxwell House from my Cold, Dead hands...."

  14. Uh, we grind our own Jamaican Blue Mountain here, thanks.

  15. VCU is Deep-in-the-heart-of Entitlement, Virginia...er, I mean Richmond. My oldest son goes to school there, and it is "highly integrated".

Let's just say that there would have been riots if they had won, too.

  16. It's not an east-coast thing, as much as it's a "shithole" thing. L.A., Connecticut, Richmond. All examples of cities that are more "slums" than not.

Any excuse to break stuff and steal TVs is enough for them.

  17. So you are drinking one of the Pure Sources of God's Own Beverage, God's Blessings on You and Yours. It's that East Coast, Weak-Kneed, "and put some Sprinkle's on top, Ms. Barrista, oops, gotta answer this text" Beverages that is contributing to Brain Rot in the East Coast Megalopolis that I take issue with. Why, it's so bad there that even some Gun People are thinking about getting Double Action 1911's! Red Flag if I ever saw one!

  18. "U. Conn."??? Damn. All this time I thought the talking heads were saying "Yukon".

  19. Laughing Dog, the "shitholes" are only inner city dumps like non-downtown neighborhoods in Hartford and New Haven, all of Bridgeport, and Willimantic, of all places.

Willarico is way out in the boonies, but the welfare mommas discovered that the state money goes farther in farming country, and their boyfriends have cars, allowing them to stay pregnant and therefor employed.

New law, I'm not kidding, says the state isn't obliged to pay for more than 5 kids concieved while on welfare. Talk about getting tough!

Hartford County, minus the cancer of Hartford proper in it's middle, is flat-out lush big bucks countryclub estate stuff, politically center-left (the liberal asshats in West Hartford are almost balanced by the aerospace engineers and insurance execs in Farmington and Avon).

Middlesex County south of it might as well be in Maine or New Hampshire, and New London County is run by the sub base, Electric Boat, and the military retirees who live there.

Fairfield county, the so-called Gold Coast, is obscenely rich and hopelessly New York, and should be ceeded to that sorry place. The scales tip left because of the Gold Coast, New Haven County (welfare recipients and mindless union members), and the armpit places like Hartford.

But geographically, Connecticut is mostly conservative small towns, farms, fishing villages, and quite large state forests.

Two very different places wedged together cheek and jowl, and they do't like each other.

  20. Butler is under investigation by the NCAA. The school is accused of actually educating their student athletes. Some of the basketball team were caught on campus carrying books.

  21. @EdFoster,

I can almost hear you typing, are you that close?

So much to say, such a complicated and fascinating little postage stamp of a state, I will spare all of us further observation;)

Wow, my word verification right now is "roofy". Is that some kind of sign?

  22. "But geographically, Connecticut is mostly conservative small towns, farms, fishing villages, and quite large state forests. "

Geographically, MOST OF THE COUNTRY is mostly conservative small towns, farms.....

..... seems like that when you subsidize professsional voters in an area, though, you ineveitably get more of them..... Who knew?!?!? The architects of the Welfare State, that's who knew.

Now the left has a formidable, soon to be unbeatable voting bloc: those who get goodies from the government. Felons can vote again, and they are working on giving work tourists from anywhere the franchise ..... circling in the porcelain bowl, we are, 'cause it ain't sustainable.

  23. I was unaware of those math riots referenced by Mr. Newman.

Ugly scary stuff, humanity is such a circus. When ever something pops up as an excuse here come the clowns throwing all the pi's and making fubar.

Math riots! --vaguely shaking my head and trying to appear lost in thought here-- Math riots!

  24. Bwahahahaha!

VCU riot? THAT was a riot? One block of "pushing back rioters" per a video that shows no rioting?

I live in Richmond. Let's just say that this "riot" didn't even make the news. At least not in a major way. As in, nothing on the radio, and no footage in the local news. If there was footages, it was small enough to miss.

    Riot....hahahahahaha!

  25. Well, if you were sent to Storrs, CT (home of UConn) for four years, you'd probably want to participate in a riot. Or start one. It's most famous recent resident was Wendy O. Williams, who so loved living in Storrs that she repeatedly tried to off herself (and finally succeeded).
