I did not know this:

The night we bombed Oklahoma:

  1. Texas has always been at war with Oklahoma.

I think this one beats it:

  2. Boise city is just down the road from here and frankly IMO the Army could have done a better job of it. LOL

  3. I find it very interesting that everyone essentially took it in stride. If anything like that were to happen today, I can't imagine the reaction would be anywhere near that equanimous. Interesting story no matter how you look at it.

  4. "it is the only continental American town to be bombed during World War II."

Well yes, but not by a foreign government...

  7. This post puts me in mind of a country song from my Navy days.

*hums* You're the reason God bombed Oklahoma...

  9. Yeah, sounds like the bombardier was better than the nav'...

  10. Hey thats pretty funny.

Whats really great is that the towns folk just let it role off their shoulders and went on with the business of living.

Kinda reminds me of this clip:

  11. Everyone in Dalhart knows you have to turn right to go straight or you end up in Boise City. Almost as bad as Dumas where if you go straight you'll end up going exactly the wrong direction.

It's not the navigators fault. They didn't tell him the Texas North Pole is in the panhandle.

  12. They had it coming, you know.

  13. Tasso: Texas has a town named Dumbass?

  14. In possibly related developments, the lights went out in Georgia and old Dixie was driven down; eyewitnesses report bells ringing and people singing.

  15. Shoot, my state (SC) has been graced with a dropped nuke...the conventional explosives detonated.

Just one? They've dropped almost a thousand nukes on my home state, and it wasn't just the conventional explosives that went off...

  17. Hey Kristopher, no need to pile it on. Dumas is named for a settler of French origin. Think of the old song "I'm a Ding-dong-daddy from Dumas." There are towns with odder names, even in that general part of the state, let me assure you.

And yeah, navigating through Dalhart and Dumas can be challenging, especially with road work in progress.

  18. Kristopher, it's spelled "Dumas" and pronounced "doom'-us". Likely if you crack that joke while there, they'll open a can of "whup'-ass".

No, I live in Oklahoma. But I've been to Dumas, Dalhart, and Boise City many times.

  19. I actually handled a tech support call from Dumas TX, and asked about it. The man who called just laughed about it, and stated that the real idiots were across the border in Oklahoma.

  20. "... the real idiots were across the border in Oklahoma."

Everything's bigger in Texas, y'see, especially mouths and opinions.

  21. Y'all keep in mind that Texas also has a town named "Cut and Shoot". just north of Houston.

  22. I'm not sure anyone's done better than Wyoming - Killpecker Creek. So named because of the effects of the minerals in the water. Not far from my favorite radio beacon - Crazy Woman VOR.
