I find it very interesting that everyone essentially took it in stride. If anything like that were to happen today, I can't imagine the reaction would be anywhere near that equanimous. Interesting story no matter how you look at it.
Everyone in Dalhart knows you have to turn right to go straight or you end up in Boise City. Almost as bad as Dumas where if you go straight you'll end up going exactly the wrong direction.
It's not the navigators fault. They didn't tell him the Texas North Pole is in the panhandle.
Hey Kristopher, no need to pile it on. Dumas is named for a settler of French origin. Think of the old song "I'm a Ding-dong-daddy from Dumas." There are towns with odder names, even in that general part of the state, let me assure you.
And yeah, navigating through Dalhart and Dumas can be challenging, especially with road work in progress. LittleRed1
I actually handled a tech support call from Dumas TX, and asked about it. The man who called just laughed about it, and stated that the real idiots were across the border in Oklahoma.
I'm not sure anyone's done better than Wyoming - Killpecker Creek. So named because of the effects of the minerals in the water. Not far from my favorite radio beacon - Crazy Woman VOR.
Texas has always been at war with Oklahoma.

Boise city is just down the road from here and frankly IMO the Army could have done a better job of it. LOL
